Well i have Brimar with double mica and I paid it 90% less then this guy is asking - so it can very well stay in Japan :p

Guys...SFox and I dug into this years ago. He brought me up to speed on this stuff. Footscray STC was selling for over $500 each 5 years ago already. More than Brimar. Oldway FE sold for like $40 then. The tube Goran has is a Brimar double mica. Again a diff tube. I jave had Cetron/CEI/Mazda/Haltron version of that. Maybe even a Brimar...cant recall. Never had the Fivre as it was akways too expensive.

So Justin, even if similar looking Footscray production is always far more expensive that Oldway. The market values it a lot more, based on extensive but subjective user feedback.

Norman you missed the point. The £800+ tube in the eBay link is an FE Oldway.

Given there appears to be no difference in the Footscray versus Oldway, I wonder whether the grids and filaments are in some way different.

Goran I agree it's not the same. But STC is Brimar. As a quick example see this 5Z4GY add.

I also did research into this years ago. Here are my notes on what makes it a footscray:

1) D getters
2) hanging filaments below mica by springs, not abutting the mica
3) straight support bars (outside anode plate), none crossing

could be labeled stc or brimar. Need to have all those features to ensure footscray.

FYI, I had long discussion with Langrex who is that ebay seller years ago and requested specifically those features. Let me get pictures of different versions

So here are some pictures.

1) brimar labeled but has all the features
2) very similar labeling to #1 but notice the O getters
3) not labeled but notice same construction as #1
4) picture of hanging filaments on all of them
5) included for fun, a fivre from the 1960’s supposedly

Excellent post. Mine has circular getters exactly like your pic 2. Otherwise the same as 1. Can you hear any difference between 1 and 2?

Ok this is interesting, I had a new pair of eml px4 I got by mistake which I thought were a bit “soft” and closed soundstage. Since I had the footscray brimar out, I switch it in for the tak 274b. More air and bigger soundstage. And now the sound had a bit more bite to it and bass was faster, At the cost maybe, of loss of density. But really did sound better.

ill test it out later. Right now have the D getter brimar in with comments above. I’ll let it play a bit and try the Brimar with O getters
