Luxman M-900u power cable choices?

...I liked the TWL Obsession on the Luxy c900 pre, and the AQ Hurricane was just OK. I had two Hurricanes on the amps, but to speak frankly, I think that braided design is a huge hassle for most set-ups. Borderline unmanageable and NOT worth the bother.

I actually ended up with VooDoo AirSpectra on both the pre and MSB dac. I bought another Obsession and use them on the two m900s. Overall, I like the system balance a lot.

I asked Pete at TWL about the Obsessions and would he do anything different...even custom...for Luxman gear. He thought the IECs would be a design limit, at some level, and having the ground "wire" in the pc cable would be a net-plus, even though unneeded for Luxman. Hope I'm paraphrasing him correctly from memory.

I heard the new M10x and c1000 pre at a dealer last week. With Magico s3s, I think it was. MSB Ref dac. Sweet. Hope you are enjoying that new M10x @carlosnewidea

TWR Obsession pc is great, you need to expend much more to get better performance. The M10x is an step up over the M900u, a much more engaging amp with better grip in bass. I lived 1.5 years with the M900u and the system/room is the same, so I have a real reference.

And the outcome was??
Pretty much the same as previously reported. Tonal balance and overall "sound" was good but the amazing holographic imaging and huge soundstage was severely compromised IMO. Notes were slightly blurred as compared to an amazing amount of solidity and space around the instruments/voices. I tested it against a couple of older Shunyayta cables including Alpha v1 NR and the difference was significant. I will be ordering up an Alpha v2 NR for it next. Would like to get a Sigma but trying to not break the bank! Bare in mind that I don't have any dedicated lines anymore (used to have 4!!!) so I question how much better the higher end cables will be in my circumstance. Meanwhile I just received my Denali 6000/S v2 and Alpha XC so just getting them burned in.

Well in for penny! I just received a set of Alpha V2 Nr PC's for my 3 source components and got a Sigma V2 NR for the M-900u. Burning in as we speak but first reaction is favorable. Thankfully ;-)

Well one cable arrived so i plugged it into My M900u.
Good sound overall. Nice tone and realism. Black background. All good...except....the sound stage collapsed.
And not in a minor way.
I will put it back in the system and do a full burn in. The guys at Luxman think it needs it before I cast judgment.
To be continued!
Hello Mauidj, what is your advice for the PC on your M900u? thank you

I ended up getting Shunyata Sigma v2 NR. Very happy. YMMV of course.

Hello maudj, i have 2 other questions :):
-is Shunyata Sigma v2 NR heavy?
-what about its stiffness? is it flexible?

happy new year!

Philippe

Hi felipe91,
If you don't mind, I would answer that question. The 1.75 m Sigma NR V2 is around 5 lb and yes, it is very flexible compared with the Hurricane PC. For your information, the Sigma V2 PC elevate the C900u preamp performance a lot, however, for some reasons, this preamp doesn't like the Hurricane PC (at least in my system). Ansuz C2 (much more expensive than Sigma V2) is another great match for Luxman preamp. I bought one just for testing purposes and it is great, however since I have a full loom of Sigma V2 PC, the Shunyata sound more natural to my ears.

Hi carlosnewidea, thank you very much. :)
i have also M900u and C900u and probably it would ge a good choice to feed them.
ESPRIT Eureka PC is another possibility but they are also very expensive (like ansuz).

...it would be interesting to find a high-end (whatever that means to each individual) power cable, with advanced materials, but only two conductors...since the ground is not connected at the IEC inlet for Luxy. I have spoken to a couple of small manufacturers, but their designs are always three-conductor, of course (2 + gr) and there's no profit in redesigning/testing for two-conductor versions. Maybe a small manufacturer in Japan?

Hi Felipe. Happy New year to you! Glad that Carlos answered your question. I agree with him. The Sigmas really do work well with Luxman gear. And they are not "silly" expensive. Just expensive! Happy New Year all!

Hi Markus. I did wonder that myself. Before buying the new cables I had a long talk with Richard from Shunyata and he told me that the ground leg is necessary even though the Luxmans are internally grounded. I honestly forget the reason but I will ask him again to explain it to me.

...necessary for the geometry/design to work as intended, perhaps? If the IEC fixture doesn't have the earth ground connected, I would think the "buck stops there" electrically speaking. That said: always glad to learn something new! Hope all good out your way!

Yes indeed..all good Markus. Hope you are well. Happy New Year to you and yours.

Hello,

concerning the Shunyata sigma 2 power cord, what are the diameters of the conductors?

For example, for a gigawatt LS 2 EVO, it's:
  • Phase : 3 x 1.8mm Pure OFHC Solid Core Silver Plated
  • Neutral : 3 x 1.8mm Pure OFHC Solid Core Silver Plated
  • Ground : 3 x 1.8mm Pure OFHC Solid Core Silver Plated
  • Shielding wire : 1 x 1.5mm , tinned
It's not mentionned on shunyata website. I saw that Conductors are : ArNi® / OFE (sigma NR)

It would be interesting to compare even if the diameter is not the only criteria.

Hello Philippe :) , I've just had the answer from Shunyata:
"The overall . gauge of the Sigma NR v2 conductors is 6 awg. As for the individual internal conductors and their specifications this information is proprietary."

Hello Carlos,
concerning Ansuz C2, could you define how it sounds compared to Sigma V2 PC? is it brighter?
Thank you

Hello

finally i have bough 1 Gobel lacorde power cord and i'm very happy with it (i have also one on my C900u).

Luxman representative in france answered to one question:
"Dear Sir,

... If the devices do not have an earth, it is to meet electrical standards. They also have double insulation between the chassis and the electrical circuit.

Furthermore, you can, if you wish, use a galvanic isolation system which drains interference and current residues from the ground socket located on the chassis of the devices. That's always a plus.
It is not always desirable to connect the earth or ground of all devices to each other. The ideal is rather to wire independently or in a star.

The chassis ground is an earth for the signal, it is not identical to the earth connection on the mains base."

My question is: has someone already tried to connect M900 u ground socket located on the chassis to the earth ? For which result/improvement?

thank you
