Jack, from what I know, the 8th team should be ahead of the 9th team by 4 or more games. If 3, they both do a play in with the 8th team needing to win only 1 game, the 9th needs to beat the 8th twice.

This is now very exciting as Memphis lost tonight and Portland won. They should be about tied for the 8th spot right now. The conspiracy theorists are probably jumping up and down as they are rooting for the Blazers to meet the Lakers on Round 1. Btw, Lillard just poured in 61 points tonight.
Precisely correct Phil.

They felt it would add more competition which in fact it has

I think the Raptors will have to be reckoned with again this year- I'm a big fan here in Toronto.

This is a good read as it explains all of the possibilities of the 8th seed

Decision Day arrives for Suns, Blazers, Grizzlies and Spurs

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- A team is going to reach the Western Conference playoffs with a losing record for the first time in 23 years, which ordinarily would not be exciting news.

This year, it's the talk of the NBA.

And the race has come down to the last possible day.

On Thursday, four teams - Portland, Memphis, Phoenix and San Antonio - will finally decide which two clubs get spots in the play-in series to determine the No. 8 seed in the West playoffs.

Portland and Memphis control their fates, while Phoenix and San Antonio must win and get help. The regular season ends Friday, but all four of the West play-in contenders wrap up play and decide matters Thursday.

''We can finally look at it,'' Suns coach Monty Williams said. ''It's our next step. We know we're not totally in control of our fate, but we put ourselves in a good position. Nobody would have guessed the Phoenix Suns would have been in this position when all of this started.''

The Suns are 7-0 at the season restart, the darlings of the NBA bubble - but finishing the seeding games at 8-0 doesn't even guarantee them a play-in spot. Phoenix plays Dallas in a 4 p.m. game, the same time as a matchup between Memphis and Milwaukee. The Bucks will be without star Giannis Antetokounmpo after he was suspended for the game for headbutting Washington's Moe Wagner.

San Antonio faces Utah at 6:30 p.m., and Portland plays Brooklyn at 9 p.m. The Spurs are bidding to be the first team in NBA history to make 23 consecutive playoff appearances, and caught a break Wednesday when Utah became locked into the West No. 6 seed, meaning the Jazz have nothing to play for,

Of course, the other three play-in hopefuls' opponents - the Mavericks, Bucks and Nets -are all locked into their various postseason spots and have nothing at stake as well.

''The way things have been down the stretch for these games, as tight as it's been, it's been pretty exciting,'' Portland coach Terry Stotts said.

Memphis guard Ja Morant, when asked by ESPN last month if the play-in tournament format was fair, said ''honestly, I don't think so.'' That's when the Grizzlies had a 3-1/2 game lead on Portland for eighth place; that lead is all gone now.

Portland goes into the final day of the West race a half-game up on Memphis, which is technically ninth because it holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with 10th-place Phoenix. San Antonio, in 11th, is also just a half-game back of Portland.

''Just got to out there and perform,'' Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. ''We're going to wake up Thursday and we're going to be ready to go. We're definitely going to leave it all out on the court. No doubt in my mind.''

The play-in series between the eighth- and ninth-place teams after Thursday's games begins Saturday; the No. 9 team must win Saturday and Sunday to advance, the No. 8 team has to win just once.

At stake: A matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers in a West first-round series.

THE RECORDS

Even if the NBA counts the play-in games toward a team's overall record, the best winning percentage that any of the four teams would take into the playoffs and Game 1 against the Lakers is .480. The last time a team made the West playoffs with a record below .500 is 1997, when three teams - Minnesota, Phoenix and the Los Angeles Clippers - all pulled it off.

CLOSE RACE

The standings between these four clubs are super close - and given the way these clubs played against each other this season that should come as absolutely no surprise.

Scoring averages against one another this season:

- Portland 118.3, Opponents 117.3

- San Antonio 116.9, Opponents 116.4

- Opponents 117.2, Memphis 116.9

- Opponents 114.5, Phoenix 113.5

And one other nugget: The Spurs scored 1,169 points against the other three play-in contenders, which was the exact total that the Grizzlies scored in their games against the other contenders.

CLOSE GAMES, TOO

The Blazers, Grizzlies, Suns and Spurs played a total of 20 games against one another this season - with 10 of them decided by five points or less and only three decided by more than 10 points.

What went around came around on the big-win front, too. Each of the teams enjoyed one double-digit win and dealt with one double-digit loss, always against the same opponent.

San Antonio's biggest win against the play-in contenders (a 30-pointer) came against Memphis, while Memphis' biggest win (13) came against San Antonio. Portland's biggest win (16) came against Phoenix, and Phoenix's biggest win (10) came against Portland.

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN

Phoenix had a one-point loss to Portland and a pair of two-point losses to San Antonio this season. Depending on how Thursday goes, those heartbreakers - a two-point loss to the Spurs was on Dec. 14, the one-point loss to the Blazers was Dec. 16, and the other two-point loss to the Spurs was Jan. 20 - might be the ones that got away.

LATE SLIDE

Wednesday was the first time in 201 days - 60 during the actual season, the other 141 coming when games were halted because of the suspension caused by the pandemic - that the Grizzlies did not wake up in eighth place

I've been pulling for Phoenix in consideration of their long suffering fan base but looks like Portland will land in 8th - and they have the best team among the contenders for the final spot.

There are some great first round matchups, especially in the West. Will be fun to watch.

Lakers rest their entire first team except KLeBron in the first half when they had a 10 point lead . Playing only their Deep bench now and are down 27 points. Well season is over and everyone knows who they are playing in the first round except the Lakers

Can one of you explain why the play in doesn’t involve the Suns as well, as they had the same record as the Grizz

I think it is because the Grizzlies had a better overall record within the western conference (20 wins, 26 losses) that the Suns (19 wins, 27 losses)

sorry for the error previously

Finally found some information on Montrezl Harrell's quarantine status. He was given a 7 day quarantine. He'll clear that on this coming Monday and be available for game 1 of the first playoff series vs the Mavs - presuming he is not infected.

well it's set

Lakers vs Blazers

Lillard is an amazing player but Ja Moran gets my vote for ROY

Lakers are going to find this first round far from easy

This was the best game I've seen of all the seeding games I watched. Big future in Memphis

It's time to see if Lillard wil rise up and be the money man in the playoffs and not just another great regular season scorer. If he can lead his team to win four games and not just score 60 and lose the series.

And this is where the 'nothing to lose' Blazers get their incentive over the 'title or nothing' Lakers - to stage a big upset in the bubble.

And how bout Melo, he's jelling with the Blazers. He now seems more serious and it will be nice to see him play against his banana boat buddy Lebron. :D
