From NBA.com

Memphis -- The Grizzlies aren't just fun to watch (thanks to Ja Morant's highlight potential and some of the league's best ball movement). They're playing well, 9-6, with wins over the Heat, Thunder and Clippers, over the last four weeks. At 15-22, they're just a half game behind the eighth-place Spurs, who they will host on Friday as part of a six game homestand that begins with a game against the 11th-place Timberwolves on Tuesday and concludes with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day game at FedEx Forum.

This one is for you Phil, also from NBA.com

Top 10 rankings in the league

1. Milwaukee
2. Boston
3. LA Lakers

That's great to know, Steve. Celtics have been winning somehow with one or two guys injured, holding on to leads and even coming from behind deficits. Starting unit is small ball. Tatum is getting some All Star buzz, and Brown is quite improved. I like the smile of Kemba, and hoping Hayward stays healthy.

Well here’s a flash
Celts lose tonight and the Bucks get hammered by the Spurs 126-104

Good to know we're keeping pace with the losses of the Bucks. :D

Bad shooting night for the Celtics. And I can't believe there is a certain Brown that keeps shooting the lights out for the Wizards. IT did well. Happy for him.

IMO Doncic is the only player now who can beat Giannis for MVP. He is a superstar and is only 20 yo

Luka Doncic's latest 30-point triple-double gives him more than rest of NBA combined

DALLAS -- Opposing defenses go to such great extremes in the attempt to make Luka Doncic uncomfortable that Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle has made a point to publicly and profanely complain about their physical tactics.

Maybe teams should try putting microphones in Doncic's face and asking him about his historic production. He's clearly uncomfortable when that occurs.

"I don't know what to tell you, man," Doncic said with a swarm of media around his locker Monday after his 38-point, 11-rebound, 10-assist performance in a 118-110 win over the Chicago Bulls.

In this instance, Doncic was asked for his thoughts about recording more 30-point triple-doubles this season than the rest of the NBA combined. Doncic has hit that statistical milestone nine times this season, compared to a combined eight by every other player in the league, with Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James (three) the only other player with multiple 30-point triple-doubles this season.

Doncic has squirmed several times when asked about his statistical accomplishments this season. For example, he insisted that nobody compared to Michael Jordan when his run of 20-point, five-rebound, five-assist outings surpassed Jordan's for the longest such streak by anyone other than Oscar Robertson. Doncic's streak reached 20 games before ending when he sprained his ankle.

"I don't mind, but [it's] just stats. I think every game is another stat," Doncic said, referring to frequent notes on the rare historical company he joins statistically. "For me, all I would say is it's more important to get a win."

The 23-13 Mavs are 7-4 when Doncic has a triple-double this season. He broke the franchise record set by Jason Kidd in 1995-96 with his 10th triple-double of the season, with 39 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in Saturday's overtime loss to the Charlotte Hornets.

This marks the second time this season that Doncic has had 35-plus-point triple-doubles in consecutive games. He has scored at least 35 points in a triple-double six times this season. Houston's James Harden and the Lakers' James are the only other players to have such games this season, with one apiece.

"The rare thing about Luka is he's doing this at 20," said Mavs shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr., who scored 15 points in 22 minutes after missing the previous three games with a strained left hamstring. "I haven't really seen any 20-year-old be this effective on both ends of the floor."

Doncic indeed has no historical peer when it comes to producing triple-doubles at such a young age. He has 19 in his career. Next on the list for most triple-doubles before turning 21: Magic Johnson with seven and James with five.

The key sentence is this:

"No one within league circles anticipates Davis leaving the Lakers after one season."

Sources: Anthony Davis declines Lakers' max extension offer

Lakers lead at the end of 3 but AD takes a big fall to the floor and lands heavily on his back.He could barely walk to the locker room

AD = LAKERS. He cannot afford a serious injury if the purpose is to win till the end. Maybe he should just do pop and shoot to play 'safe'. He is a prized 'commodity'.

Chris Haynes

I heard the reason he declined the offer is that if he waits to sign during the summer he can get a 5 year max contract rather than a 4 year max contract now

Well the Lakers GM :) has rescinded and now supports Kuzma. The last sentence says it all....

Report: LeBron James supports Kyle Kuzma rather than pushing for Lakers to trade him

By Dan Feldman

Kyle Kuzma‘s trainer, Clint Parks, posted to Instagram after Kawhi Leonard‘s Clippers beat LeBron James‘ Lakers on Christmas, “Watching Kawhi highlights from yesterday. NOBODY wants to speak on how sharp his skill set is compared to Lebrons. It’s clear who’s really in the LAB and who isn’t.” Kuzma tweeted, “Call a spade a spade [shrug emoji]”.

And we were off.

Yet, before a Lakers controversy – based significantly on reading into Kuzma’s vague tweet – fully formed, LeBron and Kuzma downplayed it. The players spoke with each other then addressed the media. Kuzma said he can’t control what someone else says and denied that his tweet referred to Parks’ post. LeBron said he didn’t care what Parks said and he’s used to people using his name for clout. LeBron truly sounded unbothered.

However, Kuzma is now suddenly in the thick of trade rumors.

Sam Amick of The Athletic:

As for James, whose influence and voice should never be overlooked in situations like this, a source with knowledge of his thinking said he remains supportive of Kuzma
Does LeBron have power to get Kuzma traded? Probably.

Would I put it past LeBron wanting Kuzma traded over something petty like this? No.

That someone, protected by anonymity, is denying a LeBron-Kuzma rift means only so much. Even if he wanted Kuzma moved, LeBron would probably deny it, maybe even through back channels like this. LeBron operates far more passive-aggressively. He doesn’t want the responsibility that comes with dictating roster moves like that.

Maybe this line of speculation is unfair to LeBron. Perhaps, he’s truly holds no grudge with Kuzma.

But given LeBron’s power, it’s impossible to ignore the possibility he’s involved.

We might never learn the truth. Kuzma never made sense as a scoring power forward on a team with LeBron and Anthony Davis. Kuzma was always the Lakers’ most useful trade chip. So, Los Angeles trading Kuzma would neither prove nor disprove anything.

At least the Lakers keeping Kuzma would indicate LeBron wasn’t pushing for them to trade Kuzma. Because, again, if LeBron wants Kuzma gone, Kuzma will probably be gone.

I truly hate James and I remain conflicted about the team that is doing well and in 1st place in the west but to be able to influence trade decisions by management does indicate he sits above Pelinka in the decision process.

Jeannie has been quiet all year. I guess she is happy

I hated Dwight Howard in his first stint with the Lakers but this year I love the guy. A true team player and terrific off the bench. He plays great Dee and has even perfected a 3 pointer

IMO he has redeemed himself and is a true asset to the Lakers

Dwight Howard's contract with Lakers becomes guaranteed as resurgent season continues

No roster move was made by the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, but that was all it took for center Dwight Howard’s resurgence to be cemented with the team.

The Lakers let the 2 p.m. deadline to waive Howard pass without letting their well-known back-up center go. Howard’s veteran's minimum $2.6 million contract for the 2020 season is now guaranteed.

The non-move means that Howard will almost certainly be with the team for the rest of the season, continuing a strong season that has already reportedly garnered him an invitation to the dunk contest.

That development might not be a surprise now, but there was once plenty of reason to think that the Lakers’ waiving of Howard was more a matter of “when” than “if.”

After dark times, Dwight Howard is doing all the right things

Howard returned to the Lakers, a team in which he seemed to have burned all bridges, last offseason after a miserable journeyman stretch of four teams in four seasons.

The 34-year-old Howard was considered a shell of his former All-NBA self, missed all but nine games last year due to injury and had a reputation for being a negative locker room presence.

The Lakers signed Howard as a replacement for the injured DeMarcus Cousins, and in a manner that presented no risk to them thanks to a non-guaranteed contract. Howard rewarded what might have been his last chance to stay in the NBA by turning into exactly the kind of player observers were hoping a post-stardom Howard could become.

In 36 games of coming off the bench with the Lakers, Howard is averaging 7.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. Not the flashiest numbers, but his value becomes apparent when you look at his efficiency.

The big man is shooting a career-high 73.8 percent from the field, his 19.1 rebound percentage would land him around Joel Embiid’s No. 7 spot on the NBA leaderboard if he played enough minutes, and opponents are shooting 4.1 percent worse than their averages when he’s in the area. Perhaps most importantly, the Lakers seem to genuinely like him.

On a team in which the offense is going almost exclusively through LeBron James and Anthony Davis, an efficient but not ball-dominant Howard is the kind of center the 29-7 Lakers can use. Now, they’ll have him around for the rest of the season.
