PC Laptop Drive Data Recovery?

My aging laptop recently took a short fall causing my hard drive to become unreadable. After a quick diagnosis, it appears that the heads are bad which puts me in need of a recovery service so I can retrieve some data from it. Looking on Google, there seems to be a plethora of companies offering this service which makes this a somewhat difficult decision about who to choose. Has anyone here ever had to send a drive into someone to have the data recovered? What are the costs involved in this? From the info I've com across it appears that this can be quite costly. Would it be possible for me to just swap the heads out?

Thanks.

You definitely can't do it yourself. I have never done it but I have worked with hard disk companies and they told me that there is nothing these guys can't recover. What brand is it? I have heard Seagate for example provides data recovery.

It's a Toshiba drive. I was kind of hoping that I could grab another used drive off of ebay and just swap a few parts out to get it to work long enough to pull my pictures. I'm sure someone can recover my data, I'm just not sure paying hundreds of dollars or more is worth it to me. I ran across a company who supposedly repair the drive for around $70, but again, I'm not sure if I can trust them or not.
