I am looking to explore putting together a horn speaker system for when I retire.

I am an experienced woodworker with a full shop and access to CNC, but I have little knowledge regarding the different options and trade-offs.

I would appreciate any advice on helpful books or other sources of information.

Best,

Jon

Hello Jon

This is a good starting point. Also search for Earl Gedde's comments about this article. I would start experimenting now. Start with a simple 2 way hybrid system using a conventional woofer with a horn/waveguides of your choice.

Theory is one thing hearing is another and with a simple system like that you can try to baseline the woofer and change horn "tops" trying different horn types and modern waveguides to see what you like. Keep it simple. I prefer CD type horn's and waveguides while many prefer older exponential horns as an example.

There is no "right" just what you like best so try things out. It takes some time to find your own sweet spot.

Once you get some understanding then you bring in your CNC talents and shop. You can make your own horns but I don't recommend you start there

Learn the basics first and more importantly your preferences.

Rob :)
