I have just got hold of a SME 3012R-G but am running into trouble trying to fit the rca cables onto the Acoustic Signature Armboards because they are enclosed (see photo). Is it possible for me to loosen the socket so they point down? I don’t really want to use a 90 degree connector if possible. I guess another choice is to drill out the side of the armboard but this seems pretty drastic!

Thoughts? I really want to try this tonearm on the Ascona.

Ditch the Ascona :p!

There are conversion kits like the one below for this purpose. This one is for old style 3012 non improved version so I'm not sure if it will fit the 3012-r but there ones for it too.

Thanks David. The Ascona has been spotted and a conversation had with God. Therefore if I am to stay alive and continue posting, that will be a difficult one to do. :p

I’ll take a look at the link. Seems to be a number of possible solutions.

Cheers

Gunther of Acoustic Signature is immensely helpful and responsive. He has already sent me through a diagram of his solution which is a cutout in the armbase. This might be a better solution for me.

Howie,
I have an Ascona and run a SME 3012R. I use the 90 degree adapters that DDK recommend and I'm quite happy.

The Ascona and the SME is an excellent combination IMO.

That’s great to know that they would fit. Will send you a PM.

You can get an adapter from Ebay UK - GBP20. I made one of them with a piece of acrylic sheet - it did not look so nice, but was made in ten minutes. a1.jpg

Sorry, pardon my ignorance but I’m not sure what you did. Is it not possible to simply change the angle of the rca sockets?

It is exactly what is done - they are now pointing downwards. We just have to de-solder the wires to the old bottom plate, fit the new one and re-solder the wires. Going back to the old plate is always possible at anytime. Just for purists who do not consider adding adapters . Another alternative is fitting bent connectors to the SME cable.

Gotcha. Seems like a few options available. Thanks.

I got hold of a SME tonearm cable with short plugs and a spring fitting that allows the cable to bend. Will see if this fits.
