Not another USB DAC????
Genesis fans who have been following my digital server exploits will know that when I first used a music server during CES 2005 in the Alexis Park other manufacturers laughed at me. Arnie hated the idea so much that he made me hide it and refused to let it have the light of day. At that time, I used a USB thumb DAC called the Turtle Beach Micro Advantage but as an optical interface into a Theta Gen VIII DAC.
A couple of years ago the M2Tech Hiface and later the AudioQuest Dragonfly gave these USB flashdrive-sized interfaces and DACs legitimacy.
Here's the latest that has just been launched on Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gavn8r/geek-a-new-usb-awesomifier-for-headphones
The "GEEK" will handle hi-res PCM at 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz, 352.8kHz and 384kHz. It will also handle DSD at 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz
It has line-out. And it has a real, proper headphone amp with two headphone jacks with proprietary spatialization software to take the image out of your head.
On Kickstarter, the initial goal was reached in less than 12 hours, and tripled within 48 hours. When I signed up, the first 100 at $99 was already gone, and so was the second 200 at $119. At this point, there are still some of the 500 $139 ones left. But even at $199 this is a steal.
