What is the best speaker you have ever owned ?????

stats

Oh look.....more pics of Acoustats!

We know you love your behemoths, but remember your opinion is just that...an opinion. You make it sound like the Acoustat is a speaker that can't be surpassed in performance on any level.

Completely agree even tho I also owned a few pairs of Acoustats time goes on....................:)

Agree with Steve. I owned a pair for 8 years and while they are an interesting design, they suffer from two aspects that I think are endemic to most 'stats'....1) they do not move air and 2) they have a "plastic" kind of coloration.
Don't know if this applies to Mr.Acoustat's modded pair, BUT it sure did with mine:(.

Same here ... However I wouldn't go as far as saying that "Stats" and panels do not move air ... Something like the Soundlab Ultimate or The old Apogee Diva with adequate amplification (read powerful , ARC-welder type of amps) will shatter that notion.

Back to the " ... thebest speaker you have ever owned?"

I'm beginning to think that today is MrAcoustat's turn in the proverbial barrel.

I have no problem with that because most of you that once owned Acoustat's where from the 90s, i'm talking about a 2013 model that held it's own against the Wilsons Alexandria's at 20 times the price i think that's pretty good and with the two JL,s in the system it moved more AIR than the Wilson's. ouch

I take it you compared the speakers in the same room with the same electronics with the same AC lines and same source material?

well let's just say that they move air but without any visceral impact

Honestly that is too far back in my memory to compare to the current crop of dynamic speakers (which by the way have gotten so good as to match what we take as strong points of planars) but I did hear quite a number of times an Apogee Diva tri-amped with krell MD-500 or 300 3 mono amps each side: One amp for Woofer, one for Mid and one for Tweeter) !!! , it was the system of the late Hy Kachalaski and there wasn't any lack of visceral impact with that system but I do hear you and it is the reason I am willing to explore dynamic designs in my next reference system of course there will be subs ;) for more impact , visceral or otherwise :)

Best or are you throwing it out there as most unique? Outside of his little speakers, never been blown away by his bigger designs.

I'm putting out there as the best speakers I've ever owned.

Only sold them because the cabinets were so poorly finished.

OK just wondering :) His big speakers that I've heard lacked any semblance of continuity through the musical spectrum. Sure he gave you some controls to adjust the bass, mids, and tweeter but that never could completely balance out the speaker. YMMV.....

Yes sir FOR THE PRICE i believe this to be accurate, the only one that i prefered over the Spectra 8800s where the MBL,s 101 but $$$$$$$$$$ and i sir have heard both:)

PS: Yes sir you are correct it is ONLY my opinion but i think that it is just as good as someone else's, live and let live.

And what exactly IS "the price???

Remember, as Steve posted, many of us here have owned Acoustats, often more than one iteration and often with extensive cabinet and electronics mods.

Interesting...while I'm definitely lacking in high end experience, both my brother and brother-in-law has Dick's full set (Met 8-9-10) and recall they sounded incredible. But it was VERY picky with the electronics. Sounded OK with solid state but imaging and dynamics was pretty spectacular with tube gear. I remember hauling a couple of non-audiophile friends to listen to the Sheffield Drum Record and the part where the brush or hand plays on the snare gave everyone goosebumps. I've yet to get that same feeling again. :(
