Magico uses "aircraft grade" aluminum and copper. I have tried Isodamp, which worked. I have also used a simple but strong adhesive, JB Weld 8281, which I purchased from Home Depot.
Something I have done is to use copper plates on top and bottom the steel. This seemed to help quite a bit with any ringing effect. Use something between the plates however, so they don't come into direct contact with each other (Isodamp, cork, etc.)
Peter,
Where did you source your steel plates? I'm thinking of doing the same thing with Stainless Steel C316. These could look fantastic with an automotive paint finish.
Because isolation products of any kind are not required to play music through your system.
Having said that, however, the owner of a highly resolving system should desire something to make the ill effects of vibration negligible.
I have been in the position of the audiophile visiting a fellow audiophile and listening to their system. I really didn't know him and had never heard his stereo before, but he offered to play a CD on a California Audio Labs player through a pair of Hales speakers (this was around 1993). I was...
Interesting and somewhat ghoulish.
Has anyone noticed their system sounds better, perhaps as a result of fewer seismic vibrations these past few weeks?
From @Seismologie_be
Isodamp is available with a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) option on one or both sides for a small additional cost. The PSA also helps absorb vibration. The isodamp I purchased did not come with any adhesive, however, I think it can be added after purchase. Isodamp can be purchased in...
Two points about isodamp:
1) It will leave a mark, similar I suppose to sorbothane. Something to consider before placing it on high value items.
2) I was told that isodamp "outgasses" water. However, I have had this stuff since November and have zero water problems.
Given the above issues, I...
Hi, Peter
The effect is somewhat like using properly positioned Sorbothane, used as intended, only more so. The noise level audibly drops allowing you to hear more complex and subtle nuances in the fabric of the music. The noise floor is lower as well. One thing I found interesting is that with...
Hi, Tony
Yes, I have been using different materials for shelves. Still experimenting, but I have had some seriously positive results.
The Adona shelves are a made from a thin layer of granite on one side and a layer of MDF (I think) on the other. They are bonded with a material that is said to...
Lately I have been experimenting with surfaces ranging from granite to delrin to carbon fiber, employing a a constrained layer damping approach, with Sorbothane washers or isodamp. I have had very positive results with two 1/2" thick delrin plates, then using isodamp as the CLD. My ARC Ref 2SE...
I made a list and handed it to him.
He said in the next 18 months or so.
-New turntable/arm (AMG V12)
-New digital processor. (TBD)
-New isolation platforms
I bought a pair of Wilson Sabrinas last December and use an ARC GS150 to drive them. I auditioned the combo at Alma Audio in San Diego (hi Alex!) about 18 months ago and was floored by their performance. I also heard the Alexia 2 in the same system. While the Alexia 2 was superior sounding, it...
I am really enjoying this thread and, If I may, it does sound to me, at least at the top tier of analog and digital, that it is no longer an attempt to compare apples to oranges, but rather comparing a Red Delicious to a Granny Smith.
Just my humble opinion.
I should add that the last...
We saw Diana Krall in concert four years ago, at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. She just didn't get into entertaining her audience. Stilted performance. She's not comfortable on stage.
Tomorrow, an electrician is going to provide an estimate on installing dedicated AC lines for my system.
This is on the second floor of my house, so I'm probably going to need a secondary box.
I'm envisioning the following:
1) 3 dedicated 20 amp lines. (one for the amp, one for analog, one for...
