* Did you watch a film last night (on Blu or DVD), and what was it? *

Not here in North America yet, ...Criterion Collection is working on it.

Great. I hope they are also working on Robert Altman's 'Short Cuts'.

I revisited this one last night ::

127695_large.jpg

Another great film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. ...And starring one of my favorite actors, Geoffrey Rush.
If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. ...Overall: 91.85 ...you can round it and make that 92. :b
{I use HDMI connection, with copper wires, high speed HD.}

I watched this 20th Anniversary Edition (4K remastered) last night ::

127643_large.jpg

Better picture quality than my 15th Anniversary Edition BR. ...Now I'm waiting for the 25th Anniversary Edition; UHD - real 4K.
Overall (technical merit and film replay value): 81.3 (score is less 20 years later than when it was new, but technically better now on Blu...before it wasn't...Universal studios).

Didn't know there was a new version. Really enjoyed the movie when I watched it first. And yes, that transfer was not all that great.

Every five years there is a newer/better Blu-ray version Amir. ..And this one is no exception, with a much better picture quality. ...It is called technological evolution, with better transfer tools today than the ones from five years ago (plus sometimes access to better masters), and five years from now you can bet that there'll be another one even better...UHD.

* This 20th Anniversary Edition was scanned @ 4K, to give it the edge in picture quality...and also to cash in now before cashing in again when the newest UHD one comes.
It's a very popular BR title, and Universal studios they just know what to do...business strategy wise.

And the difference in picture quality is obvious over the 15th Anniversary Edition. ...Videophiles are like audiophiles...they are upgrading to the best transfers, re-mastered, scanned, newest/improved music recordings and movie mastering, ...higher definition, higher resolution. ...And from the software, and from the hardware, and everywhere between with the best tweaks. ...Up to the silver bullet (pure silver wires). :b

Exactly six years earlier Alliance Atlantis from Canada released this same Blu-ray title, which I have too.
The picture varies between my two BR copies, this new one from Warner Bros is less detailed but richer in colors.
It's a question of overall preference; I upgraded my BR version because this film is very very well done artistically and creatively, by a master of photography.
The director, Tarsem Singh ('The Fall'), is a true cinematique artiste.

'The Cell' is highly recommended by me (and also 'The Fall' from the same filmmaker).
Overall: 98 (out of 100).

? This is an important film, in the atmosphere it conveys with firmness/uniqueness/flair.
New emotions are to be experienced, ...comfortable and uncomfortable ones, in movie magic, and here you have them in top spades.

Just to add to the above; the score (music composer) is from Howard Shore & The Master Musicians of Jajouka.
The music is hypnotic (musique envoutante), and abso!utely enrapturing @ the extreme of quasi discomfort.

Revisited (3D) :::

Overall (film & technical virtuosity): 92.25 (film = 86.5 and 3D picture/sound = 97.5).

* You can sit outside on your veranda during a peaceful summertime evening during the sunset while listening to one of your favorite classical solo cello albums or jazz albums, or/and you can watch an animated colorful film later @ darkness in your flat panel TV or from your front projector, sitting on your couch inside your home, and feel fulfilled either way, and in many other ways.
Take it all in, check 'The Book of Life' on Blu and in 3D.

Do you ever listen to music, Bob?

Do you ever listen to music, Bob?

Yes Ian, all the time. ...The music is constantly playing here @ the sanctuary where I live.
I do listen to the radio a lot...Classical, Jazz @ Blues.
Every film I watch @ night has a music score in it.

My turntables are in my basement, with my albums, in a passive mode of nostalgia in their own boxes. But without playing they don't mean much anymore today in the now.
And several CD/SACD/DVD/BR players are spread over the main floor, and when in a specific inspired mood everything is ready quickly.
We all have our periods, we are all from various backgrounds and generations and habits.

We have music threads here @ WBF, but for the most part and time they remain inactive, very.
We don't usually post much there, we like more posting in threads that have polls and discuss audio matters...all.
And the music is always playing when I post, discuss in audio/video forums...not matter how much money and experience and my social status is in real physical life.
What counts is the spiritual life in balance with the physical one...harmony, fulfillment, awareness.

On average per each day I'd say I listen to music (passive mode) for roughly twelve hours. ...Except for the days outside the sanctuary.
And on some days the music is playing for about sixteen hours.

This is very interesting that you asked because it's a very good question to all of us...how many hours a day are we listening to music on average?
And if not home, when driving, riding, shopping, walking...are we the walkman type...with headphones music listening on the go?

You have a very nice hi-end sound system Ian; how much time do you spend listening to music from it?

* When I posted my post (from your quote in the preceding page), I was sitting outside on my couch and jazz music was playing on the radio...Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny "Beyond the Missouri Sky" (got the CD too), and before that there was another tune with acoustic bass and trumpet...don't remember who was playing...but lovely and realistic coming from inside the castle. ...And before it was a classical radio station, with cello solo music...for roughly half hour. ...Gorgeous music.

@ this moment right now I am listening to the birds, and to the young lady across the field teaching horse riding to the teenager girls. ...A moment of peace and quietness where I feel completely and comfortably numb. That quietude of exhaled peace is also part of my music ritual...and among the music I love playing...thinking of the children and the sun.

What I love most about life on this planet is peace, freedom, and all the people on it. ...And music listening & playing.
... R.I.P. Andre, Bruce, Rene, Irene, Geraldine, Jean, Dad, ...

We all pick our hobbies because we feel good...I picked music and nature. ...Among many other things, and they are all part of what we truly are. ...Inside and outside.
I don't listen to music actively like I used too, but I'm good with that, I accept transformation from another perspective.

So yes, the answer is for several hours a day the music is continually playing, and I only watch TV for about two hours a day on average...a Blu-ray movie late @ night. ...No news, no TV programming, no regular TV @ all, no cable, no satellite, no coax, no streaming, no downloading, no nothing else than just Blu-ray. ...One per day. ...Occasionally two, but it's getting rarer and rarer.
...And you Ian?

Thanks for the reply, Bob.

The reason I ask is that I have a nice home theater and don't use it much because lately (the past couple years) I want to listen to music and can't get enough. I listen to music some mornings before work for about an hour and then at night for an hour or two (while cooking dinner or sitting down in the listening position before bed). On weekends I listen much more (sometimes morning to night).

I am now very behind on movies. I have a huge pile to watch (maybe hundreds at this point) and I seem to watch one every few weeks. I do squeeze in an hour (after dinner with my wife) about 3 times a week to watch an hour of a TV show, but even that is less than I used to.

Not enough time in a day! I'm guessing you are retired and have more time than me (of course I could be wrong). I think if I was in your position I would watch a film each night. Ahh that would be nice. :)

Yes, I am fully retired, for the last twenty years now (well, fifteen solid ones)...but tell no one. :b
And I am not rich, to the contrary. ...That is my biggest challenge in this material world we live in, ...all that jazz.

The main thing is to maintain a solid foundation with our families, children and friends. ...And the music.
By the way, speaking of music...Jazz ? is playing on the radio right now...piano, trumpet, acoustic bass & all. ...And I'm sitting outside on a beautiful day.

Ian, I am in the same boat. It must be Magico's fault. I have had my S5s 15 months now, and I can't tear myself away from them on Friday/Saturday to watch a movie. I start, and then go back to the stereo. Last weekend I finally finished Jupitor Ascending after starting over for at least the last 5-6 weekends. :)

You guys got me all warped up now. Less movies more music is good for the equilibrium, the stamina, the balance of the brain's vitality. ...How much for a pair of Magico S5s ...A pair of M-Projects?

Say hello to our Peruvian bear in London. ...He ends up on that London street with a London family in their home.
It's all London true accent with peaceful/pleasant characters all around. ...Even Nicole is in it. ...No I kid you not man.
I must say, the bear is CGI created and surreal, but the actors are all charming and real.
A good family flick to enjoy all together. ...Nothing violent here, just Nicole playing with darts guns, to make the bear sleepy...she's a taxidermist. :D

Depending of your age group and your mood @ the time of viewing; I'd say you have a good chance to enjoy the trip, but not as much as listening to music from a pair of Magico loudspeakers...there is more magic in music than in 'Paddington' the movie. :b

But anyway, take a chance if ever you have one. :D

? Overall (film value itself, plus technical aspects...picture and sound quality): 80.0

Did I watch a film on Blu-ray last night? ...I sure did. ...I revisited this one ::

It's funny; I don't play the drums, but the guitars (various), flutes (various), harmonicas, and I can improvise on the piano, sax, clarinet, trumpet, etc.
It just don't matter...all musicians can relate. ...Excellent replay value...the music...the actor's performances...the lines delivery...the dedication (the young drummer dumped his sweet girlfriend in order to not be distracted @ becoming one of the very best drummers).

I'm sure most of you have seen it...but in case you did not...or even if you did...and you're not sure about revisiting it (some folks never see the same movie twice; it's just the way it is...and nobody is going to change that, and even for all the gold @ Fort Knox), just try it...it's that kind of film...it sure is for me...and if it is for me why can it not be for you too? :b ...Only you hold the key of the holy grail door. ...The pain and the agony...and the ecstasy.

Lol, what a powerful over-the-top flick! ...I mean you got to be truly addicted to masochism to endure all the suffering, humiliation, abuse; verbal...physical...and mental!
Can you bleed like that playing music? Sure you can, ask any dedicated musician with an over-the-top passion. ...I bled from my fingers, from my lips and from my heart, in the past.
Now I bleed from my soul when listening to some tunes.

My overall rating score (film's merit, and audio/visual technical points...and of course actor's performances): 93.5

<<>> Final word: It was a pure accident that I re-watched it (I was simply testing something for just few seconds), and I got trapped.
What a ride, again! And it's not me; it's this film, the power of it...the actors...the music...the horror...and the endurance, the labor, the kitchen sink, the love, the hatred, all that jazz.

=> In today's computerized world we are assimilating human values with artificial creations. ...More and more our technological world is slowly eclipsing yesterday's world and replacing it with abstract satisfaction on a level of pleasure never imagined in the past.
All type of ideas are resorting and surfacing above the horizontal horizon in a new multidimensional virtual world.
It's all about our senses, visuals, auditory, ...plus the mind expansion.

Enter Ava's world and her creator, a computer geek/nerd, plus a contest winner (computer programmer), ...an experiment of an experiment.
The concept is not new, and the outcome is meditatively twisted.
Ava is cute, and with attractive curvatures and structure. ...Plus she's smart, of her own. ...She developed within herself without any external control. ...Just the way smart robots should be created. :b

A young computer nerd won a contest organised by his boss, also himself a computer "brained" motivated by whatever no boundaries of the imagination. ...Self-satisfied and living in a beautiful natural setting away from the coffins of skyscraper's offices from the big cities (a very nice spot actually, above a river surrounded by trees and mountains).
So, the contest winner is invited to his boss's natural peaceful residence. And his prize is to do some experiments with Ava.

First, there is no sex involved here. :b ...But sensuality, yes, in a different kind of visual/mental sensuality. ...It is complex to describe as each one of us reacts differently when confronted to this type of stimulus; and even more so from a film we are viewing @ home (or @ the theater)...the director's own creation for us to experience.

As the film progresse with the experiments we get to discover Ava's mind functioning. ...Fascinating in some new ways.
The ride is smooth, capturing our interest as the characters are fleshed out. ...The music (Portishead) is the electronica type, to fit with the premises of Ava's robot type creation.
But the more the interaction between her and her experimenters takes place, the more she is transforming herself into a human female with intelligent superiority.
She is deconstructing the robot within herself and reconstructing it with more human parts...flesh and brain included.
But don't expect sex; I have already said that there's none. :b

It was a good change from the likes of Hollywood's comic super hero flicks like Transformers, Avengers, and them Ninja Turtles.

My overall rating score (film's content, technical aspects, storyline, actor's performances...total personal like's and/or dislike's level): 82.5
Check it out; there is something in it for everyone. ...Visually, auditory, mentally, conceptually, locales, ...all that synthesized electronic jazz. ... ex_machina

WBF is certainly, first and foremost, a high-end audio forum (site). ...And it it also more than that; it is a diversity of opinions covering the full universal gamut from a bunch of very smart people.
For me, its major force is in the marriage of everything that is opposite and in accord. ...That differentiation between black and white, up and down, horizontal and vertical, analog and digital, objectivity and subjectivity, music and passion, war and sensibilities, science and philosophy, arts and poetry, fire and ice. :b
...Between reference (what is reference?) and preference (always restricted by our own experience).

The best advancing discussions are the ones with two opposite groups for every topic @ hand.
...You hear the two sides with their pros and cons from each corner of our galaxy.
That's how we learn much more by digging into both/all sides much deeper, using EVERYTHING that we can find to support and/or to question what is and what is not, and why.

It's almost like in real life. :b ...Like our music preference and film preference. ...Why do we prefer this music recording over this one, this music genre over that one, this film in particular, that one instead, this film genre over another one. Not everyone like the same music, films. ...Some like the Bee Gees, others Frank Sinatra, some folks love John Coltrane and Miles Davis, others prefer Beethoven and Mozart. ...And so on, and same with films...most people love sci-fi flicks, and others prefer old black and white classics from the Charlie Chaplin era. Women love romantic movies, men like war movies. ...Most like good comedies. ...And everyone love the best PIXAR animated films.

Two things: Music, and Films. ...Hearing, and Visuals. ...It's almost like assisting to a Live Classical Opera @ the theater hall. ...A play, a passion play.

? Last night I watched this :b in 3D :::

Right from the bat most of you are going to think that this is kid's stuff! ...And your thinking is 100% right!
By the way, who are the real kids? ;):D ...Ha!

The technical 3D rendition is well done (animated movies are always best for that), and the audio is, well, it is SpongeBob, so no Beethoven or Coltrane music here.
As for the animated film itself, just wear your squarepants and you'll fit right in the mood...kind of sucks. :b But I'm saying that in a positive way, sort of. :D
Brief, you'd be better asking the kids of your children...grandchildren, for an honest opinion. ...And not all grandchildren were born the same way.

So, what's in SpongeBob for us growing adults here @ WBF? ...It all depends...of our mood in the moment present.
What was in it for me last night? ...It reminded me how much I miss the good PIXAR animated flicks...like 'Up', 'Ratatouille', 'The Incredibles', 'Toy Story'.
And! I am also thinking of UHD animated Blu-ray movies coming up later on this year, and how it is going to look like in our new UHD displays.
Why? Because the last few animated BR flicks I watched recently, in HD (2K) and in 3D, have a problem with "movement focus". The picture is distorted, not clear, not detailed anymore, unfocused, not rolling smoothly with fluidity, uniformity...losing its charm due to inferior picture technology...frames per second, digital anomalies, carelessness too by the technical film transfer department team. ...And yet, no one talks about it!

All that I am telling you is this: We are still way behind when it comes to music reproduction and film projection.
And a rating score (technical and film value) like this one here for SpongeBob @ 79.5 is a long long way still from 100.
But it's better than a VHS tape, for sure.

Anyway, it is what it is and you've read it right here @ WBF, and nowhere else.

* P.S. I hope Amir is ok. ...Without Amir, WBF wouldn't be the true high class it is. He's the guy who invites us all to discuss and advance, all together.
I am saying that because it is the truth. And you can bet that he is fully receptive to what all of us we're saying.
He is one of the solidest pillars here and over there. ...Just had to say it, and right here, in this movie thread, in my own words, voila.

I am watching American Sniper now. This is one of the few BlueRays that work like a DVD. That is, when you turn the Oppo back on to resume watching you are treated with 'Resume play from where stopped' message. I have lost count of how many times I have cursed a BR for not having this basic feature.

It's the same thing when listening to an album on rotation, or a music CD spinning. ...Most turntables and CD players don't remember where you left off last time. ...@ the movie theaters?

* 'American Sniper' is a Warner Bros BR title, and most FOX and Disney BR titles remember where you were last time, @ your mistress' apartment.
...Columbia too I believe. ...Universal and Paramount...I don't remember. ...Lionsgate and Criterion, I think so.

** When a film is over four hours long, for some of us, yes, that makes sense. ...Before I turn off my BR player, if a movie was unfinished viewing, I simply look @ the time. ...And I just wait for the same time two months later, or two days later...if I remember. But I could also write it down, on my cell.

;-)
