Now, back in the days when he was dueling with Jack Nicklaus, I rooted for Jack. That was because Nicklaus was from my home town so he was a local favorite in Columbus. Turns out they were both great champions and, truth be told, Palmer was the bigger star and better loved.

I spent part of my youth (summer school vacations, about 7-8 years) on a golf course, a magnificent one, in part of Quebec.

He not only built the foundation for today's PGA Tour, but helped renew the world's interest in the British Open Championship.
