H3000 - unimpressed so far - what am I missing?

I do gather that MF prefers audiophile skeleton type sound i.e. very large point source imaging, on the bright side, lots of leading edge definition unobscured by tone, dry bass, mellifluousness need not apply.

It's a fairly standard sound that you hear at audio show displays, and there is nothing wrong with it if you like it that way. For me, it is lacking a bit in gestalt.

I would not say that. It seems that most who have tried the Allnic headlamp have preferred it to the inbuilt SUT's. That seems to backup what Fremer says.

Not sure why Allnic do not offer the choice of the headamp built into the phono? Especially on their tor phono.

I would tend to agree with regard to the H3000. The H5000 DHT uses different SUT's presumably better. I lean towards using the head amp, but the SUT's are close and a lot quieter noise floor wise as you would expect with a passive device. They also have a surprisingly firm grip on the bass are extremely musical and have timbral accuracy to die for. I think I like jazz/brass perhaps better with the 5000's SUT's. It's all a preference and it's nice to have two distinctive sounds using the same phono stage.

It would be interesting comparison if you could get a hold of the Ypsilon SUT and plug into one of the MM inputs on your Allnic.

cheers

I like the built in SUTs, just like the head amp better. With SUTs, you are getting into the more variable realm of cartridge/SUT matching, some combos will work better than others.

I do think that every account of using the Ypsilon SUTs with the Allnic that I have read so far has favored the Ypsilon SUTs over the built ins.

The Ypsilon SUT's are quite reasonably priced @ $2800. I think a large portion of the Ypsilon " magic " is in their SUT's.

I know a few guys that have bought the Ypsilon SUT and it has easily beaten the SUT they had.

I thought the H3000 brightly etched and lacking body when I had it. It was flat and without any depth or body, veiled is a word that comes easily to hand.

It wasn't all bad - on occasion it sounded ok to me. Esp with simple music. But mostly just... ordinary.

I have heard the Ypilson SUT in two systems now and enjoyed it immensely in each.

Btw...I'm not sure the answer to a 12k phono is a 5 k head amp...

@myles - I have Granite Audio phono run in disc btw....and used it. Yes bias dials were all fine etc.

Agree MF, like all reviewers these days, love every product they get their hands on. After all - never let the truth get in the way of a good story - especially when your living depends on selling advertising.

More fool me for believing the hype...

I'm auditioning the H3000V right now and I find it has a lot of body and depth, but it is rather dark sounding. I have yet to roll the rectifier tube.

All well - there you go - perhaps I had a dodgy unit, or a tube was on the way out or something, or we hear different things.

Anyways - I repeat - all power to the folk that like the Allnic gear. Not wanting to rain on anyone's parade..

That sounds very unlike an H3000. The opposite in many ways. The 3000 is natural and fluid (not etched) and has body aplenty with great depth, space and holography.

Not the one I bought.....

and besides - you sell the stuff Lotus - of course you are going to say it's wonderful...

I didn't say it's 'wonderful', I described some of the unit's strengths which are polar opposites of what you experienced. I am drawing attention to the strong likelihood of your sample being faulty in order to help bring some clarity to this thread. Regardless of whether I am a dealer, user or idle speculator, I think that's fair and useful to Allnic and also to forum members too.

I have to say it's a real shame that you didn't get more dealer support with this used purchase and also have the opportunity for a home demo. You seem to be jumping ship now as impulsively as you dived in. Have you considered sending the ex-demo H3000 back to the retailer for a checkover ? If you have no one to turn to other than a forum then perhaps you could speak to David Beetles at Hammertone who is worldwide distributer. I am sure he would be very upset to hear of your disappointing experience and would do all he could to help you.

Or the H3000 is just a ordinary with a big price tag.

As for the rest of your post Lotus...all I will say is I am not selling anything and you are.

There might be lots of that going around. Price is no guarantee of enjoyment.

Whatever you say Andrew, just trying to help with some ideas.

You don't like your Doshi phono?

My Doshi phono is part of a full function preamp. I need a phono to use with my Pass XP-30 preamp. I would love to have a Doshi phono!

It's the best I've heard....

Disclaimer: I have not heard the top of the line Boulder and Ypsilon in my system...

I have bought and part-exchanged goods with Lotus more than once and can tell you that he his a knowledgeable and friendly salesman with an impressive record.

Although I have never seen any Allnic Audio equipment, Albert Porter system at audiogon has shown the H3000 for many years and I have read fantastic and enthusiastic descriptions of listening sessions with his friends in his system - IMHO your view about this unit is not typical.
