SET amp owners thread

If you squeeze the 520b properly, it produces almost the same power as an 845 tube, around 24 watts class a1. But that gets expensive in the long run; a pair like that costs €1.1k.
Emission Labs has a more suitable tube for that power , the 1605. Ayon uses a more powerful variant, what they call the 62b and even an 82b, which can make 30 and 35 watts, respectively. I had a 1605 based amp once that was rated at 24 watts and an Ayon Crossfire III rated at 30 watts and a Horning amp with 520b rated at 18 watts…so far I think this NEM might be the best sounding amp I have heard with this output tube family.

I only know it with a 300B. That thing is extraordinary. A friend has one combined with a La Rosita Gamma HD streamer/DAC. The combination is as hard to find as a four-leaf clover.
listen to something like this, have fun with Russian Beast.

This has been my philosophy since about 2005.

Should add zero feedback to it

The Meishu
That’s interesting because this new Meishu Tonmeister is quite different from previous incarnations of the Meishu. This new one has an interstage transformer between the driver and output tube. Previous ones were the usual cap coupling and only from about Jinro or P4 balanced and up they would transformer couple. Now they are trickling that design down to lower models. Not too surprised then that it sounded good.

So if transformer coiled jinro did not sound as good as transformer coupled meishu, how did you conclude that is because of transformer coupling?

Curious, what did you like about the Meishu over the Jinro?
I also had earlier preferred KR KT88 integrated to Jinro. In both cases I thought Jinro was boring and totally off in musical timings

Because the original Meishu sounded rather “Meh” and if this one is much better and the main change is transformer coupling, then I conclude that the transformer is likely the reason for the improvement.

I don’t know how this compares to original all I know is it is better than Jinro which I have not liked twice in compares now. It is not like it left me feeling wow, at the same time as an integrated amp and commercial branded product it is not expensive.

Also, they have many levels above this with their usual transformer and silver and other parts upgrades so maybe the most expensive one is wow

Do you know which version of Tonmeister you heard? Is it the base one like in this Stereophile review, with relatively inexpensive not so large EI transformers or did you hear the Silver or Silver Signature, which has much better Double C-core transformers? The top Tonmeister Silver Signature is not inexpensive. Interestingly, these three sub-levels are still technically level 3. They now have a level 4 (Double C with silver secondary windings) and a level 5 (Double C with all silver windings and 50% permaloy nickel core). I guess the level 5 Meishu Kapelmeister is probably around 100K.

It was the middle one, Line Silver signature.

But above the 3 models of the Tonmeister, Meishu has the Konzertmeister and Kapellmeister

It was interesting how compressed the more powerful EL84 and EL34 push pull amps seemed in comparison, given the easier drive of these speakers. Similar had happened comparing airtight 300b to Airtight El34 on Devore (but not on Cessaro wagner which required more drive of the EL34)

Did those PP amps have negative feedback?

Tonapparate, has a Supravox field coil 11 inch woofer. The horn model above this (the Maista) has two 15 inch woofers front loaded but haven’t heard it yet.

Audio Note Meishu 300b Tonmeister, Jinro, and a couple of push pull from audio note (EL34) and Aurorasound (EL84) were compared.

Origin live resolution and enterprise table with Zyx omega was source, and the top rega model with Zyx airy.

Hello! I'm considering the Model 55 of Uwe Meyer. What do you think of them? After investigating the components it appears that it is a high class speaker. How's the sound? Could be interesting to compare with the AlNiCo as well.

Hi if you like your AN I would stay with them. What is your room size. Both have a certain colouration if you like it stay with it or move on

I hope I'm not intruding the original intent of this thread.

I currently have entry level Audio Note speakers (AN J/D). I have been considering a lot of speakers, from Hora Audios "Coco" to Swissonors "B.A.C.H. 12d" to Admire Audios "AA2". I even contemplated proceeding with a field coil driver by Mr. Rullit in a DIY cabinet (made by friends) and using it as a single driver (full range concept).
The easiest and most convenient thing to do is to upgrade my AN J/D to perhaps AN SPe/HE (the signature model is where my budget tightens). Anyway there is something about it that I simply can't stop thinking about. AN SPe/HE has a rather simple SEAS unit whereas the Model 50 and 55 has AlNiCo and field coil driver respectively. The 55 also have a bronze horn replica from WE. Caps and components are Jupiter and it's solid wood - it just sound as if the whole speaker is of better quality.

My room is 5 x 5 meters and approaching 2,7 meters to the ceilings in an old manor apartment.
