RCA 12BH7 Black Plates versus Grey Plates

    Interesting, thanks!

RCA 12BH7 Black Plates versus Grey Plates

Thanks! I'm not making anything: I'm just going to try replacing the 12au7s in the preamp sockets of my integrated amp, with a pair of Tung-sol 12bh7s. While the sockets specify 12au7s, the manufacturer says it can also handle 12bh7s.

RCA 12BH7 Black Plates versus Grey Plates

Because they can be noisy and/or microphonic, or some other reason?

RCA 12BH7 Black Plates versus Grey Plates

Did you mean to say that 12BH7s are not good preamp tubes? If so, would you mind elaborating on this a bit? I have a preamp that is designed for 12AU7 tubes, but will also accept 12BH7s in their place. Is that substitution a bad idea?

    Good mid-price audiophile switches

Thanks, but this is in a FB Standard vs. FB Extreme DC + Firebird LPS. I can't help but wonder whether the improvements were due to moving from FB Standard to FB Extreme, or because of the Firebird LPS, or because you also changed the switch from Standard to Extreme. Probably some combination of...

    Good mid-price audiophile switches

Does anyone have an opinion on how much better the FiberBoxII Extreme + Firebird LPS (i.e., using the DC version of the Exteme) is than just the AC version of the Extreme (which also seems to have an LPS built into it)?

    New Weiss DAC 501 / 502

I wouldn't hold my breath for a firmware update. The last one was a year ago.

I was also given this information directly by Mr. Weiss via email.

    New Weiss DAC 501 / 502

I find it nice sometimes in very low amounts. Makes the sound "softer". Even set to minimum, though, it detracts from resolution. I wouldn't use it at higher settings for general listening.

I assume that something like the Edison Fiberbox II, discussed extensively in this thread, would count as "fiber optic for audiophiles".

    Good mid-price audiophile switches

Makes sense. I just tried a pair of TrendNet FMCs with TrendNet single-mode SFPs, just to test the impact of optical on my system. The results were very positive. As an aside, even the designer of my DAC (the technical Grammy-award winning Daniel Weiss), had suggested to me that noise over...

    Good mid-price audiophile switches

Thanks, though it shouldn't be necessary. Are you affiliated with him? I will probably wait a bit to buy. I just ordered a pair of cheap fiber media converters to test that fiber indeed has a positive influence on my system, before I buy something as expensive as the FBII Extreme.

This is extremely helpful; thanks a lot. Edison's response to me can be interpreted to mean the same, but unfortunately it was also ambiguous. Mostly likely a language barrier issue. Having two different emails from him helps a lot. I think I will get just a FBII Extreme for now.

    Good mid-price audiophile switches

For the single connection to your MU1, I wonder if Edison advised you that having a Silent Switch in addition to your Fiberbox II would be redundant. Given that both devices reclock with an OXCO, it's unclear to me what value a SS would add, when placed after a FBII. I'm trying to decide...

    New Weiss DAC 501 / 502

Of the DAC in general, or the Mk1 compared to the Mk2? I demoed the Mk1 and eventually bought the Mk2, just because it's newer. I think it sounds a bit better than the Mk1 (from memory, since I never had both together), but it could be placebo/confirmation bias.
