Duke's post is absolutely right. But lets assume you have decided on 4 subs... Then which 4 subs?
Unfortunately 4 tiny subs won't sum to equal one big sub. Even your 4 subs will all benefit from having the best characteristics possible. Large drivers with high excursion will typically be...
The concept of bass being fast or slow is some sort of subjective interpretation. The question perhaps is not that bass is either fast or slow. The question is why humans seem to consider some aspect of the speaker's sound "fast" or "slow". Is this a lack of "tightness" of bass? is it someone...
damn this is a LONG thread...
I hope the studios are taking actual recordings so seriously as folks are worrying about CD bit rates. The "audiophile" recorded CD's are rarely the actual music I listen to. Standard redbook CD can sound dramatically different based on the recorded content as...
I have the Pass XA 30.8 which is an upgrade from the XA 30.5. I run the amp with Avantgarde horns (with a new pair of Trio's on the way to test soon in my house).
I feel the 30.8 is just slightly better but very similar in character to the 30.5. Both work great with horns with excellent bass...
A dead room (high absorption) will make any speaker sound more "resolving". I would be a significant number of "audition" situations are apples to oranges because of vast differences in the way rooms are setup.
More "resolving" doesn't always sound better since a more "live" diffusive room may...
I have a pair of Trio's on a ship on the Atlantic Ocean right now... can't wait to try them out. I love my Duo Omegas as well but these should be a step up in bass coherency.
For subs I currently have 10000 watts of power running via a Lab Gruppen 10000Q PLM amplifier to my custom made 15"x8 drivers (4 sub cabinets). These produce a staggering amount of bass with about as decent of an in-room response as you are ever likely to achieve. They will be mated to my new...
just in case nobody has said it:
over 95% of the time, your best subwoofers will be DIY. Mass market subs including JL audio rarely come close.
4x12" drivers or 3x15" dayton audio ultimax's in a sealed or ported enclosure powered by around 2000-2500 watts ...
I have owned a pair of JL audio...
I find the pass xa30.8 is quite holographic for a Solid state. Pass has more experience building class A than just about anyone and they test on high eff. Speakers.
I cant tolerate poor bass or mid bass response of set amps... It would really annoy me.
If you have gone so far as to setup resonators then you are NOT messing around... I won't doubt you if you say the response is impressive. This is a very complex process to actually accomplish it well.
At the same time, "linear" response is one thing but creating sufficient SPL to match the...
As a company, I trust avantgarde to build products that will work as intended. My experience so far has been quite good.
I seriously considered the avantgarde amp but it certainly would not be considered affordable and it is not found on the used market in the USA.
I would love to try and...
I have the Pass Labs XA30.8. Running Avantgarde horns, this amp sounds EXCELLENT. Not sure how exactly to be poetic using audiophile terminology. With high sensitivity speakers, extreme quiet (hiss) is needed among other things, and these deliver. Other amps that I have tried with these...
If we are talking about producing a sufficiently rigid structure for subwoofers, there is no reason to stop at aluminum... some of us in the DIY crowd simply create a custom concrete form around our enclosure... problem solved for vastly less money.
I would be really impressed if the rooms...
The odds that this sub will beat multi-driver DIY subwoofers made by guys in the DIY forums is ZERO. Anyone who thinks otherwise just doesn't know any better. I owned JL Audio Fathom 212's until recently, and even those are simply wimpy compared to what I was able to produce form DIY subs...
