A properly set up reel to reel tape recorder should be indistinguishable from its source at 15 ips. My old mentor Tim de Paravacini made it clear that tape does NOT add colouration, only bad record and replay amplifiers and poor heads do. He was very proud of the fact that his tape recorders...
I have had two lacquer discs cut from my recordings, to test them out. I have played them about 10 times each, and one of them is about 2 years old and still plays fine. I don't believe they do actually degrade, and I don't think they are intrinsically softer than vinyl is, which is pretty soft...
Don't you think there is this assumption that just because it cost $20,000 and is in a very expensive CNC milled box, ego it must be a better DAC?
Sure everything is in the design, but most of the brains are in two areas - the DAC chip(s) themselves, and the design of the audio stage. Both sit...
Only theoretically - I don't have access to the manufacturer's techniques. There are interfaces that include mic preamps that then digitise the signal and send it via USB or Thunderbolt like the Steinberg systems. Then there are others like Merging Horus that send the digital signal via CAT45...
I wouldn't say its more complex to use - its certainly a lot easier. The technology and speed of the hardware has transformed what is now possible. I am setting up a orchestral recording with organ for Wayne Marshall next week, and we doing 7 channels at DXD 352.8 kHz 24 bit. An ordinary...
First of all - this Monty video has done the rounds and is quite simplistic. Be that as it may, I don't subscribe to the notion of mains cleaners and DACs making much difference on CD Audio. Sorry I have to disagree with you nicely, at the engineering level as well as the audio level, that...
Its not entirely nonsense. This only holds true when the signal is bandwidth filtered. The music has to be filtered first for recording, to remove aliasing effects of higher frequencies, and after to mitigate the rubbish that comes out after the Nyquist frequency limit, what ever that may be...
I do most of my commercial recordings at 352.8 kHz 24 bit. This is somewhat 'overkill' but it does yield a signal that is to all intents and purposes, 'analogue' as it would be understood, and exceeds the bandwidth of the best reel to reel recorders by 2 or 3 times. 192 kHz is in my view the...
There is often a romantic idea of Reel to Reel tape. A really good tape recorder is basically 'transparent'. The only difference is a slight rise in back ground noise, which is less at 15 ips over 7.5 ips, and less on half track versus 1/4 track. But if the sound is changing considerably when...
Welcome James. I would suggest that this was not a good way to start on this forum. We don't know this chaps side of the story and its also not very polite in my view. Even if your completely accurate. It would be more serious if he had ripped you off and taken your money, and then I think you...
You did a calibration with the calibration disc? Some records are so crap they can't be read properly. We know coloured discs won't read. I do have the odd record which really will only play on a stylus option. Also heavily compressed and dense grooves can be tricky - like a 30 minute LP...
I ultrasonically clean my LPs and they are nice and quite on my ELP. I always put the LPs into virgin poly bags and they remain clean for a long time. Only if I play it on a turntable do I have to re-clean the discs. The best sound is from vinyl that has never seen a stylus!
Hi Jerome. I also have a ELP turntable but I have never been able to find this filter option. Can you tell me how to locate it or deactivate it please? Thanks _ Jake Purches, UK.
