Is the Grimm AD1 DSD A/D converter still the best?

Thanks, but I don't have the ability to play back the DSD files. I do know though that Jared Sacks at Channel Classics says he still thinks the Grimm sounds the best out of all the converters he's tried, including the Horus. And even though it only operates at 64x.

    DSD comparison to PCM.

Well yes, but I think you have to go too high with PCM in order to not have to brickwall bandlimit, which is the seeming advantage of DSD (and perhaps why it seems to sound better). But distortion is big issue with DSD, even at 64x. There were papers written about this when DSD first came out...

    DSD comparison to PCM.

Yes, but 352.8Khz/24bit PCM doesn't require brickwall bandlimiting, and would seem to be the optimal solution. The problem seems to be audible distortion at that high PCM sample rate. I at least hear it with the device Morton Lindberg is using to record at that sample rate. This is why I like...

    DSD comparison to PCM.

Hmmmm. I wonder what Jared Sacks is hearing then? What always stuck out for me is the Grimm's sound was tight and crisp, where as other converters sounded artificially 'soft' and 'gooey' by comparison. But of course I haven't actually heard the Horus. Is the Horus a chip or is it made with...

    DSD comparison to PCM.

Subjectively 'better' or more accurate to the source? It gives that same tight sound as the Grimm? I think Jared Sacks has tried the Horus and didn't think it was as good as the Grimm, which is why I'm surprised to hear this.

All sound better than the Grimm to you?

What sampling rate are you using?

    DSD comparison to PCM.

I haven't read the whole thread, but it seems to me it comes down to the fact that every converter, DSD or PCM, will exhibit some signature to the sound, good or bad, desirable or undesirable, likeable or unlikeable. When DSD first came out there were problems with it, i.e. artificially...

    Marantz SA8005 or Marantz UD7007?

I'm late to this, but I own both. The SA8005 is definitely better sounding. Better balanced with a very even freq. response and has richer, better tone quality. Really excellent overall sound quality, especially for the price (but even not including price). Also, the UD7007 doesn't do native...

Is the Grimm AD1 DSD A/D converter still the best?

By 'best' I mean the most accurate and/or true to the source. Not necessarily preferred. It only operates in 64x, and now most people like to record in at least 128x. But the Grimm sounds so good and true to the source because its ultra low distortion design priority. What do people think...

    DSD comparison to PCM.

I have lots of 2L releases and the PCM sounds pretty much the same as the converted DSD to me. BTW, I think DXD, as 2L uses it, is really 128fs at 4 or 5 bits and not really native 352.8Khz/24bit. None the less, 2L DXD does not sound as good as the Grimm (to me), as it too exhibits some...

    DSD comparison to PCM.

The problem with DSD, as I saw it, was distortion (i.e. artificial 'rounding' and 'softening' of the sound), but that was remedied with the Grimm AD1, which is quite frankly the best and most accurate sounding converter I've ever heard - be it PCM or DSD. The sound is really smooth, tight and...
