You can setup some delay and switch off output before playing to avoid anything going to amplifier and speakers when, among other possible things, going from PCM to DSD. You may get some clicks inside the DAC for clock changes for example, but nothing should go to amplifiers/speakers.

There was a recent firmware update that may solve this kind of issue. I had same kind of issue going from 96 kHz to DXD on a Premier that was solved by this update.
