Being mentioned here and there, this subject deserves its own thread.
Horizon owners, do or did you own a pre amp that Horizon was able to match or surpass? Any pre amps out there that outperform Horizon's volume control?
Could you translate you amp's input sensitivity from 1v for 100 watts to Ohms? My amp is 200K Ohm. The manual states the Horizon likes high input impedances.
Glowing review, as the Horizon deserves.
Greg: "My listening with the direct output from the Horizon was virtually identical to my experience using my line stage"
Greg's $46,000 True Life SSP-1 pre amp did not (clearly) outperform the Horizon DAC-direct.
I wonder how much you need to spend on...
Have an Horizon on order too, Mouse Grey Pearl with (powder coated) copper top plate. ETA is early December.
Thanks for sharing all the info here, it's been very helpful.
For amps and speakers with two sets of bindings posts per channel, which would be better:
- 1 pair of $10K bi-wire speaker cable, or
- 1 pair of $10K speaker cable with matching jumpers, or
- 2 pairs of $5k speaker cable.
For example, one pair of Shunyata Sigma v2 vs. two pairs of Alpha v2's...
I have a Tambaqui DAC and am considering the K50. Currently I'm using a Roon Nucleus connect to the Tambaqui over ethernet. What were you using before and could you describe the improvements?
I understand that, but in the USA the Tambaqui is $11,500 vs. $6,700 for the Terminator Plus. Almost double the price. I can image people saying "Yes, the Tambaqui sounds better, but it's outside my budget, so I choose Terminator (Plus)". I'm looking for people having heard both.
Great info here, maybe you guys can help. I need to pull the trigger on a new DAC, but there’s no opportunity to audition them. My shortlist and considerations:
Terminator Plus DAC & Gaia DDC $8,700
+ Big box, DAC only: no budget/space wasted on volume control, remote, ethernet, etc.
+ DAC gets...
