    On Cables

I believe we are primarily talking about the IC between your preamp and your amps, right? If so, I think you could pick the “right” cable using a good DAC, which would eliminate the need of moving the turntable.

    On Cables

One way to tackle this might be to start with your sources in the same room as your amps and speakers, permitting the use - and this comparison - of normal cable lengths. Once you zero in on the brand you like most., move your sources to the next room and order a long version of the cable you...

Auditioning a turntable is kind of ... impossible?

VLS will say get a MSB Reference DAC.

    OCD Hi-Fi Guy

I thought my MSB Reference DAC was amazingly organic and supremely natural sounding, but a man on the Internet strongly asserted otherwise, so I will have to get rid of it. In the future I will clearly need to pay closer attention to his incisive, well informed, and deeply reasoned analysis...

Measuring power line capacity with the IDEAL SureTest, and the effect of Shunyata power products

You’re right, this difference *may* not be audible in a particular system. OTOH, if you can make small/cheap changes in your power delivery that improve this number, why not do so? Having lots of unfettered clean power is good, and certainly better than going in the other direction. In my own...

Measuring power line capacity with the IDEAL SureTest, and the effect of Shunyata power products

A “slow blow” fuse or breaker with a low rating can have a very high instantaneous current capacity. The breaker or fuse will not trip if the high current demand is short - which is what happens when musical signals are being amplified.

Audiophile power cords vs. the cables in your walls

A clear and accurate explanation, and a refreshing antidote to the tired “garden hose” folklore. However… this perspective still does not really explain why a well-designed PC (presumably one which doesn’t inhibit local “electron jiggle”) would make a difference if connected to crappy in-wall...

Measuring power line capacity with the IDEAL SureTest, and the effect of Shunyata power products

Well, AWG is obviously an important (the most, the only?) factor in current delivery - your own results with 6AWG in-wall wiring attest to that. I assume if you made a PC out of 6AWG Romex it would have equally fabulous current capacity. So, by extension, a commodity cable with comparable AWG...

Measuring power line capacity with the IDEAL SureTest, and the effect of Shunyata power products

BTW, I find it a bit ironic that while so much attention is (rightly) paid to the wall outlet/PC plug and contact quality, the other key connection - PC to component - is hardly ever mentioned. In my (limited?) experience, the C13/C19 connectors on even very high end components don't seem to be...

Measuring power line noise with the TriField EM100, and the impressive effect of Shyunyata products

C’mon Al, don’t settle! With just a bit more effort you can make it to zero! Or even negative!

Measuring power line capacity with the IDEAL SureTest, and the effect of Shunyata power products

I think the concern is misplaced: it's made for them by Hubbell which is the preeminent manufacturer of hospital grade stuff. It's intended for in-wall use vs. equipment.

Indeed. So why not go with Shunyata's outlet as well? https://shunyata.com/products/accessories/sr-z1-outlets/

Measuring power line capacity with the IDEAL SureTest, and the effect of Shunyata power products

As I mentioned, the reason I didn't do that is because to do it correctly you need to build an adapter with quality plugs - the connector supplied with the device is not good enough. See the following post from CG: https://www.whatsbestforum.com/threads/dtcd-explained.16172/post-552802 You can...

Measuring power line capacity with the IDEAL SureTest, and the effect of Shunyata power products

You are inadvertently comparing apples to oranges... I never claimed the Denali boosts the inherent current capacity of an AC line. Rather, my measurements showed that it decreases the current capacity only modestly compared to a single Shunyata PC. Further, I confirmed that both a single...

Ah, OK. I have them angled so the reflected sound from both speakers is directed away from the listening position, as well as away from the side walls.

FWIW the diffusers I use are the 4" GIK "Impression Pro Series" (https://www.gikacoustics.com/product/impression-4inch-bass-trap-diffusor-absorber/), which, according to the company have an absorption profile shown below. (Although I don't entirely understand how it's possible to have absorption...

Measuring power line noise with the TriField EM100, and the impressive effect of Shyunyata products

The decimal point in the display is a little hard to see - my guess you are seeing 199.99. If that’s not the case, you have astonishingly noisy lines. Normal readings are ~200, with 20 being very quiet, 500 pretty noisy. How all that manifests itself in SQ is system dependent.

Thanks one more time, Al, for another thoroughly enjoyable listening session, and for your perceptive distillation of the pluses and minuses of the latest iteration of this system. Measuring power line noise with the TriField EM100, and the impressive effect of Shyunyata products

I used the 2000T (the so called “high current” version). Did an OK job on my DAC (modest noise reduction), but my amp was never happy (dynamics suffered), and I ended up with it plugged directly into its own dedicated line. The amp now sounds *far* better plugged into the V2 than directly into...

Measuring power line noise with the TriField EM100, and the impressive effect of Shyunyata products

Well, my amp has two 1.2kVA transformers, so that suggests a ~10kVA isolation transformer. Look, here’s one! Hmm, maybe I’ll stick with my Denali after all…

Measuring power line noise with the TriField EM100, and the impressive effect of Shyunyata products

I think you are right that the CD transport probably presents a fairly constant load. But a DAC has an analog output stage and its current draw probably varies quite a bit. But the amount probably depends on the brand. My MSB can drive an amp directly, and I know it likes ample AC power. And...

Measuring power line noise with the TriField EM100, and the impressive effect of Shyunyata products

I can’t say I understand how all this works all that well, but I believe what matters more than the average rating of 35W is the instantaneous peak current draw by your components. (That’s why 10 or less AWG AC lines make a difference, even though given the average steady state draw from...

Measuring power line noise with the TriField EM100, and the impressive effect of Shyunyata products

I don’t doubt that the meter is not particularly accurate, but I think that does not preclude its being useful in showing relative differences, I.e., the noise becoming lower or higher after a particular change to the system. As to the audibility, you may be right. But personally I’m wary of...
