The first step Ki forgot to mention is to reboot the system. The main cpu is on the Master MPU card and it has a button switch on the front edge that will reset the system. The other is the TD MPU (tape deck) and it has the same switch (same type card just provisioned differently).
Turning the...
bingo, not Studer jobs, only good enough for BBC.
actually these were done to be self contained editing machines, you know back before there were things called DAWs.
:-)
Cheers Alan
just replacing bearings in this motor assembly will probably NOT get you a motor within spec, and may give you serious flutter problems.
This motor assembly is not a "simple" motor with just two bearings like most direct drive motors. It is an assembly of the motor, flexible coupling, and upper...
Roger's machine looks to be the "early C37" as denoted in the Studer document archive.
later machines had pots for NAB and CCIR built in, at both speeds. Roger's has only the 4 pots for one EQ.
As far as I know, most of the C37's are of the circuit board variety instead of the turret...

not hard to find.
you just need to decide which is EH. EH stands for extra heavy (ISO100). Be aware that depending on which manual you look at it can be noted as medium (IS0 48 or 68)...
I have that part in stock, I'm not sure its any different really than the ceramic one. Just less expensive to produce. To really know I would have to mount it up and test it, and since I don't have an A820.... that becomes difficult as well as uninteresting.
Yes, there were, most of the non rolling tension sensors were retrofitted in the field. I have seen some still existing as well. An interesting note, Studer went back to the non rotating sensor in the D820 version where the scrape flutter is less invasive to the signal.
While they are referred...
I just looked at the audio archive page, it is not reliable, I found several mistakes on it in a casual read.
MKII firmware can be applied to MKI machines (done it several times)
it has a few minor differences that apply to the old deck and are useful (timing and damping differences in control...
If you examine the schematics from Studer, they give you hints on what to adjust to tweak the EQ into better alignment.
That combined with making changes to adjust for today's modern tapes (they have more hf level) can give you a chance for precise EQ.
The amplitude of low freq head bumps is...
What a long trip!
It was September of 2013 when we first talked of your desire to refurbish this deck!
Looks like Dan has done a superb job of rebuilding this deck for you. Dan is as they say, good people.
I really did think Dan was going to get Jeff to rebuild your motor, oh well.
Quite...
regarding tape head low freq response, or commonly referred to as head bumps.
the mechanism involved in creating the head bumps is a function of the playback head and is a wavelength effect. ie, when you go from 15 to 30 ips the response curve doubles in freq exactly. The position of the bumps...
I'd give Ford v Ferrari the Mixing slot, the mixers kept the energy going while maintaining intelligibility. The Editing was pretty good, but the mixing was better.
Little Women for adapted screen play
We wanted Dolomite for Costume Design. Brilliant.
Also wanted Apollo 11 to get a doc...
Instructions? its a Studer, instructions are in the manual.
I suggest the A820MCH manual, I think it has the best pictures. But read them all, they're free in pdf.

when considering bearings remember that tighter tolerance does not necessarily mean lower noise. Often on unsorted bearings lower ABEC ratings will be lower noise than ones with higher ABEC ratings.
Studer ordered vast numbers of bearings and had them sorted for noise, at that volume it was...
Agree with Mark, (mpdonahue) the table height is misadjusted for the reels you use. (and the flange is bent, too common) It is a matter of normal maintenance to adjust it to the commonly used reel type.
Get someone mechanically inclined to help you adjust it, it does cause a minute amount of...
following the sale of Studer to Harmon and the subsequent moving away from all tape based activity, support was stopped, Frank R (Harmon Support) in Northridge kept a good supply of parts for a long time, but eventually that was stoped and all replacement parts and documents were transferred to...
Interesting that you state a Revox B77 is inferior to a PR99, in that they are the same deck. The only difference is the PR99 is balanced vs the unbalanced B77.
Also the bearings in an A80 or any Studer machine cannot be replaced as easily as you seem to believe. There are always minor...
Jack Clark is an impeccable resource. I have dealt with him occasionally since the 80's, back with Revox America.
Highly recommended indeed, but I doubt he has any capstans in stock.
Cheers
Alan
please replace them, they can damage other parts of the machine when they go. I am seeing them go in A810's now. If they go in a B67 it can be quite costly. Wipes out some unobtanuium parts.
Readily avaiable from Mouser or digikey. Just do it.
Cheers
Alan
see if audiohouse.ch still has the capstans in stock, and then replace it your self. It is a simple clip on the back of the motor rotor and then it slides out. I replaced many of them back when.... (80s and 90s) May be another cir-clip to remove, don't recall.
Do not try this on later or more...
