The RVG Blue Note recordings have and are being remixed by Michael Cuscuna as part of Blue Notes RVG reissue program . I believe it started in 2003, they have been received with some likes and dislikes. Rudy himself balked at first but then gave the go ahead. I am posting some links to articles...
I was going through some old LP'S I have and found a Joanie Sommers Album from Warner Brothers It has great sound.Looking at the back , I found this in the liner notes. An amazing console and the album recorded in 1959 was on a Ampex 300-3 three track. The console is what caused me to look...
The thread to end all threads on the subject.....good reading.:)

I found this remark made by a gentleman in regards to the new Waves J37 plugin and it sums up the whole debate. It is exactly my feeling on the whole issue about analog vs digital.
"Ladies and gentlemen - please allow me to add a short remark: the secret of "analogue sound" is not a question...

If you are located in a metro area I would find a Tech that can check it out. There is a Studer List in Yahoo groups that can supply good info.Gearslutz.com is a good site for locating Tech's.It does sound like a tension problem or a reel motor ...
To me this is way over the top.You can find these on Craigslist for as little as $600 just 2 weeks ago in Dallas,Tx.The deck is in good condition but hey it's a prosumer deck not a mastering deck. You can buy a Studer A80VU for $2500 all day. There are A810'S in Germany that sell for a fraction of...
Peter you might be right but I feel this way I love tape like some love vinyl. There is nothing like tape unconstrained warm and beautiful. The machines now I am talking studio decks here Ampex ,Studer,3M, ect are very well built and out of an era that simply doesn't exist anymore. The fun is to...
The bidder clearly had the money and was going to buy the deck at any price. He even backed his bid to the end. Regardless I have seen items on Epay get in a bidding war because of the stupidity of the bidder allways following his higher bid with another. That forces the price higher because it...
Mike,
I asked Fred if he would service mine and he replied in the negative,in all fairness Fred has taken on a new venture and it is all about a custom playback A820,the ultimate playback machine. If I had Ki next store I would probably have 2 like you. The A820 is probably the finest built...
In my experience with the A820 the transport was very good only if you kept the tape path very clean all the time. The Time code head feature was a big part of that as residue built up very fast. That said the transport would malfunction at times in recording sessions arrrgh. There are only three...
Your entitled to your opinion as well as I am to mine .My opinion is better that's all .If you have the equipment to measure you had better produce those measurements shouldn't you .Otherwise your bleeding on the wrong thread.
Bob Ohlsson a recording engineer gave an interview for Tape-OP magazine in which he was asked about digital his reply below:
Well here’s a classic tape op interview question for you: how do you feel about digital?
Frustrated. (laughs) There’s so many great things about it and yet - there was a...
These go for about 85.00 ea

This upgrade is the best for the money and sound. i can't tell you how superior the Lundahl transformer is to the stock unit. The inner depth and realness of the reproduction is 2nd to none for a solid state machine. It clearly surpassed the Studer A820 by a mile on playback bringing tears to my...
This is my all time favorite Lagavulin smooth buttery and a bit of honey at the end.
I had a Scottish friend who went back every few years & bring back a sampler.
It had Oban , Lagavulin, Cragganmore, Balvenie, Cardhu, Dalwhinnie and Talisker of all I liked Oban & Lagavulin.
My scotch of...
Kal,
What is the Callas opera performance you like best?
On the Price / RCA performance Tito Gobbi has few peers and is outstanding as Scarpia the best in my opinion.
I must admit there has never been a better Vissi d' Arte than Callas / Di Stephano/Gobbi /Sabata
Overall for sound &...
One of the best interviews ever done with Rudy Van Gelder is on Jazz Wax Blog. The images, words & thought process that went into the recording make for exceptional reading. I love the images of the Ampex 300 recorders & Scully cutting lathe. My most treasured cd's are by Rudy on the Prestige...
Software will either break you or make you money hand over fist. IMHO taking software that isn't mature, live too soon is the kiss of death. Beta testing isn't long enough usually and if your support is lacking you get a total cluster@%#*. That's my experience.
Hello Myles,
Did some reading on Gold Star & your friend Larry Levine he was an outstanding engineer one of the greats.Gold Star studios is where the "Pet Sounds " album was recorded .Gold Star studios was the place to record . I found an image of Larry with Phil Spector and a very nice view...
I remember growing up and watching "The Tonight Show" with Steve Allen .He had this vocalist that had a voice that was breathtaking as a kid I was mesmerized by her power and control. She sang with such a beautiful voice I was hooked.
Years later I would see her live in San Carlos at the Circle...
Recording of this classic? I see many mediums sacd, redbook cd,45rpm vinyl and 180 & 200 gram vinyl.
There is also 2 track tape and 4 track tape which is the best for sound and closest to the actual recording master.
Well that maybe true but considering there aren't too many 2 track tapes that are in pristine condition for 54 years old i'll live with it.
Like I said the playback on the vol 1 was fine and sounded very nice.
After all I am a lover of music 1st and a collector 2nd.
