I've only heard my PD MPD-3 with the included, garden-variety USB cable. Debating whether to upgrade the latter (intrigued with Acoustic Revive, which separates power and signal) or try a USB to AES converter e.g. Audiophilleo.

MPD-3 has fewer inputs, and specifically has no optical input. Fewer parts? Perhaps. Still a substantial piece of equipment at 27 lbs. shipping, 22 lbs. out of box. And that's the DAC only (no CD transport).
