    Phono Stage and XLRs

Then we agree fundamentally on how balanced operation is implemented. We only disagree on the definition of the word balanced. And that's ok, as long as we build things that work correctly.

    Phono Stage and XLRs

No no no. When doing it like this there is no signal loss. Noise level is same (ignoring any improvements via removal of hum).

    Phono Stage and XLRs

Well yes, the 47k loading is provided by the balanced amplifier input. It does not however, cut signal amplitude in half. Cartridge sees only the 47k. If balanced with 23.5k each leg to ground, you have both + and - polarities, which are -6dB with respect to ground, but the circuit amplifies...

    Powerline adapter problems?

The issue here is WiFi digital pulsed communications getting into the phono input, right? Modern phonostages should have an RF low pass filter on the front-end prior to any contact with a semiconductor junction (transistor, opamp) to reduce the impact of demodulation. Phonostages are very high...

Suggestions for tube phono pre starting 5k range

Check out my Trumpet MC phono. State of the art. If I charged a dealer markup then it would get a bit closer to $5k...

    Phono Stage and XLRs

Cartridges are not balanced, they are floating. A balanced connection requires 3 wires, not 2, hence XLR connectors. In order to be balanced, both output polarities (+ and -) need to have the same impedance to common mode ground (this happens in phonostage). Connecting pins 1 and 3 together...

    Popularity of a step-up transformer?

Indeed. Easy to pick up hum from nearby power transformers if SUT is not properly shielded.

    Popularity of a step-up transformer?

Actually, SUT do indeed add hiss. They are not silent because they are not resistance-free. I once had a relatively low cost SUT (commercial) that added more hiss than my active (Piccolo) headamp! Why? Because the magnet wire was so thin it added quite a bit of series resistance, which led to...

    Tube Testers

I used to make one called the VacuTrace. Works in conjunction with an XY oscilloscope, so it operated a lot like a Tek 570. Matching tubes was easy as it plotted (in real time) overlaid curves. If you can find one on the used market, scoop it up!

    Popularity of a step-up transformer?

Your Gryphon phono can handle MC inputs, so no need for an SUT. However, since you are looking for a different sound, using SUT ahead of the MM input would do the trick. Probably be a little quieter (lower noise floor) and more organic sounding. The main issue with SUT is that loading is...

On hunt for new a phonostage

Totally agree. I've updated my designs to have front panel controls. Years ago I made the Trumpet Reference (no longer available), which had a wired remote that let you actually sit in the listening chair while toggling through loading and EQ settings. I even added a 1/2 second mute during...

Can digital get to vinyl sound and at what price?

Make fun if you want, but you only lose a dB. The following equipment (volume control and interconnect) becomes part of the load and is expected. I planned for such. If you are worried about bandwidth above what your DAC is putting out, then you have a point.
