    Diffuser frequencies and listener distance

Sorry. I've been working on a research paper the last few weeks that really enveloped my free time. Nothing like spending 30+ hours of work to not even put a dent into the paper. Most of the first few days was just collecting and sorting periodicals for citation. I finished the paper and I'm...

64 Cell (8x8) PRD (Skyline Diffuser) question

The 2D PRD's are audibily different from the 2D QRDs, so yes, in the context of my statement they'll sound different.

64 Cell (8x8) PRD (Skyline Diffuser) question

The differences in how they deal with phase it how the wave knows. If you alternate dramatic shifts in phase and small shifts in phase frequently it has a summing effect on the front which doesn't impact it the same way. There's a huge difference between how a PRD and QRD work, it's dramatic...

64 Cell (8x8) PRD (Skyline Diffuser) question

The word theory and theoretical mean very different things inside and outside the scientific domain. People outside of the scientific community use the term theory as if they mean hypothesis. In reality a theory is the highest level of understanding allowed in science. We would be discussing...

64 Cell (8x8) PRD (Skyline Diffuser) question

It would be a hypothetical :P I'm not sure about that. QRD's tend to shift the wave front, and their patterns represent the shift in phase necessary to bend it. PRD's don't bend the wave front in the same manor, the pattern is too erratic for small and varying shifts in phase to manipulate...

64 Cell (8x8) PRD (Skyline Diffuser) question

As am I, but it seemed more akin to a QRD seeing how most PRD's don't use cell walls, can't be 3x3, and usually have more variation in the cell heights. The pattern doesn't match the traditional design, but my thought was If there is a way of generating alternate permutations for PRD's there...

Recommend room treatments for the mini room I call "my dedicated listening room"

I really don't trust the tube traps. I'm sure they work great as traditional absorbers, but I doubt they work as advertised. I really wish they could provide some data on the traps with an without a sealed cavity, because I don't believe they are any more effective than a normal lump of...

64 Cell (8x8) PRD (Skyline Diffuser) question

I actually didn't use QRD dude, I just have an excel file. They are all symmetrical, except when shifted, then they are no longer symmetrical. They are literally called asymmetrical N5 2D QRD panels. Only 2 of the possible constant values will produce symmetrical results. Your statement is...

64 Cell (8x8) PRD (Skyline Diffuser) question

That's false, QRD's do not need to be symmetrical. 2D panels modulated - nine asymmetrical N5 2D QRD panels with three rotated. You can shift the position of the pattern, test it out with any 2D QRD generator.

Audioguy HT and 2 Channel Room (Combined)

Audioguy, just a tip. You shouldn't keep your panels all facing the same direction. You should use the barker code to alternate them a little to prevent repetition effects. :)

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

One of the most interesting theories on IC's I've heard was magnetic coupling from return current traveling via. line cord ground instead of the IC's shield. With out the return current, coupling occurs, it'll be frequency dependent, and it'll vary depending on the IC and the ground impedance...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

Everyone should use their ears. The problem with audiophiles isn't their ears, it's their eyes. If you really only used your ears, no one would be complaining. However very few audiophiles actually preform blind comparesons. I trust your ears to tell you what you like, I just don't trust...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

Of course you should listen to your hardware to make the final decision. No one is saying you shouldn't. I think what people are saying is take the bias out of the decision. Setup a blind test with a friend making the swap and see which one you really prefer. No matter how much you trust...

Mike, check your email. :p I really want to give a response to your post but I got a call while I was typing and I gotta stop by a friends place. Do me a favor, think about it not only from the standpoint of reproduction, but from recording. How would you compare 2 recordings of skin on a...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

No problem, I figured that ESL was playing a factor here. It was just a few little things like the excessive use of quotes that threw me off a little. I'm glad to see there are people who enjoy audio who haven't become dogmatic about their beliefs. I've taken away a few good pieces of...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

It can be, but the point (much like the one you were making about room treatments) is that most audiophiles focus enough on the equipment that the influences of the hardware will either be minimal, or if it is influential, it's a audibly palatable influence. I'm happy to see many more...

Raul, This isn't an attack, but your style of response adds some degree of difficulty to understanding your point. I only say this with the intention of making it easier to convey understanding. With that said, I understand what you're saying. I would argue that truly understanding the...

Why do some Objectivists fear Psychoacousitics?

Fear? I don't know anyone that fears it. I have heard countless audiophiles describe to me how psychoacoustics don't apply to them because they've spent many hours listening to their systems. It seems many people don't understand that numbers of listening hours doesn't equate to circumventing...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

Frantz, I don't think Raul was referring to room treatments being useless, but the predictive value of the hypothesis. Too many factors are ignored to represent what is actually happening. I wouldn't say it's worthless tho, it's an interesting perspective on the issue. When you think about...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

I think Ethan acknowledged that it was a simplistic method. The point is in the contexts of his comment he wasn't off base. I think the primary point of of debate is that he's excluding many other factors that will have an impact on reproduction, and people are repeatedly trying to point out...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

You see them all the time, you just don't realize it. Small room sound mechanics allow for a a lot to be wrong with out you picking up on it. As you scale the size of the room up the problems become more audible because the delay increases. Linear forms of FR distortion are harder to pick up...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

Even linear FR distortion will be audible in excess of 20db. This is also only considering FR (peaks, nulls, room gain), not taking into account other factors like masking, ringing, ect, which will negetivly influence the reproduction.

Once caveat, I would say his method would describe the % of sound we don't want to hear vs. the % of sound we hear. I would agree that 90% of unwanted distortion results from the acoustic environment.

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

Interesting way of thinking about it. For someone that debates a lot you sure commit a lot of logical fallacies, including the above strawman argument. I dare you to cite someone who's involved in scientific research suggesting anything in science is infallible. Or for that matter anyone who's...

    Why Some Audiophiles Fear Measurements

It's not a matter of something being true, it's how the data is represented. People don't take into account negative feedback or assume rates remain linear and data gets projected out to extremes. In the contexts of the research the information is accurate, but when applied in an environment...
