Initial Time Delay vs Clark (1983)

Howdy. I just read Amir's article entitled Perceptual Effects of Room Reflections. I had been led to believe by my provider of acoustical products that an Initial Time Delay of 10ms was greatly preferred. He sent me the following extract (download small pdf) from Master Handbook of Acoustics...

Still something very wrong with Korg Audiogate DSD to PCM conversion?

Well it's pretty clear that using Audiogate with gain set to zero will often lead to very unsatisfying results. Perhaps a note to Korg is in order...

Still something very wrong with Korg Audiogate DSD to PCM conversion?

SRC? I can only run the stats on a converted WAV file. Who knows. Given Audiogate used to have a fixed gain added and no ability to change it I suspect it is still doing so.

Still something very wrong with Korg Audiogate DSD to PCM conversion?

This is version 2.3.3 (latest). This version allows one to add or subtract gain but it does indeed still seem to be adding (an inappropriate amount of) gain itself.

Thanks Nyal. I'm trying to find the time to give this a go.

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

I think it's the room length. If I measure the room length ignoring the recesses on either side of the fireplace (4.4m) 38Hz is, I believe, a primary axial mode.

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

I spent some time on this yesterday. It was interesting to focus on the spectrogram when making adjustments and less so on the SPL response. I started out by delaying the main speakers by 10ms and the sub 0ms. (The distance difference from the main listening point to the sub versus each main...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Ha! Not surprised about that answer. :) I need to learn more about how to use the tools already at my disposal. I had thought RTA was useful but this phase/delay point was always bugging me. Revisiting my LF decay picture post the BAD Panel installation reminded me of my intuitive...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

I might take you up on that! In the interim I will see if I can make any progress to make the job simpler. With this room I won't be buying any more subs and I am quite constrained regarding positioning of the existing sub but I'd like to get the crossover, phase and delays sorted as best they...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Thanks. Now see, you just need to pop on over to London! My sub is a relatively old Rel Stentor II. I suspect there isn't a lot of DSP going on. It is rated 16 Hz - 120 Hz. I note it has a port underneath and the driver is downward-firing. I have the Rel crossovers set "wide open" so that in...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

I measured the distances to sub versus the front speakers. The sub is marginally closer (within 10cm). It seems odd to me that internals of the sub (crossover network - it is receiving a fully balanced "LFE" input, amplifier) would have a group delay (if my understanding of this term makes...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Thanks Nyal. Reading the first few sections there is exactly what I am worried about. (I will continue reading from "Types of Main Speakers" and onwards.) I made my adjustments for "phase" at the sub and delay at the processor by looking at the frequency domain, and am inherently uncomfortable...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

I haven't measured yet but if anything it would be a little closer. See the diagramme on pg 1. If it were just a case of a small delay then I'd get it. But a reversal of phase and a delay? (Phase is something I struggle with.) "Group" delay? EDIT: Am I right in understanding that a...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Understanding phase and delay I've continued to invest in improving the acoustics of my room. I added a couple of 100mm BAD Panels (hung on batons for a further 20mm gap) at first reflection points (albeit the right panel was constrained in size due to the window). I haven't spent a lot of...

    First reflection points and toe-in

Hi. Take a look here http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?10307-RPG-Modex-Plates-(35Hz)-placement-question/page8 Yes I am talking about the side walls. Generally I have a lot of bass to soak up. The walls are rather solid Victorian brick and plaster. I've already got two Modex...

    First reflection points and toe-in

If one has "toed-in" speakers does the first reflection point shift towards the listening position? My presumption is that it does. Also, after identifying with the aid of a mirror the start and the end of the first reflection zone (when accommodating a seating area with lateral movement, i.e...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Nyal, your help is very much appreciated. The points you make are what directed me to the purchase of 2 Type 2 Modex Plates to begin with. I hadn't counted on needing 4. ;-) I will keep tinkering and update this thread as I go along. Wendell, always good to be reminded that chasing the last...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Well I wouldn't say it sounds awful - but then again I don't have a reference for "great". I can hear the improvements introduced by the modest amounts of acoustic treatment I have done. First the heavier rug (the floor is hard tile and the previous rug smaller and thinner). Then the Modex...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Well after a day of chasing my tail inside instead of enjoying the sunshine on my day off work, here is where I ended up (I've updated the room schematic). Still a lot to do. Left spectrogram: Right spectrogram:

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

In the end I didn't. Jason continued to recommend the front because of the likely pressure build up in the alcoves and I just can't get one in the corner on the right of the rear wall without impairing the door. They're £490 for the Type 2 in the UK ($762). That's with 20% VAT included (which...

That be me. I live in South Kensington, not far from Kensington town hall. You are right. I've been chatting with Jason Hawkes from Novatone. He recommended the T2 MPs. I'm sure more would be good. He has seen pictures of the room and provided some general advice but you are right that having...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Thanks Roger. I'm glad you prompted me to look at this again. I'm also glad the Rel had something to contribute! When I initially looked at REW tests I had observed the sharp negative impact of the sub below 40 Hz and stopped for awhile. Hitting the phase switch on the sub was an eye opener...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

Thanks Nyal. Building false walls is definitely not an option. As noted before, I rent the place and even drilling 8 holes for deep-set Rawl plugs to hang the Plates means I will have to do some work to "make good" the room when I leave. I'm not interested in spending the c£3m plus another...

RPG Modex Plates (35Hz) placement question

For Roger and then Nyall - comments appreciated First, thank you Roger for prodding me to experiment with the sub. Here is a series of tests dealing with some of the vagaries of the Theta Casablanca III. A few things have changed since I did my last tests. First, the Modex Plates are...
