Such a nice guy...I'm a little surprised but he is with another great company and it is JRDG's gain. Too bad for Avalon...I was also really disappointed that they were not at RMAF. I would have thought it was close to a no-brainer for them since they are local (and have other great local...
I believe the follow-up post is correct, that he is centrally involved with the design and testing. On the CD player for example, the dealer I dealt with had a clear top so that one could see the circuitry built into the unit and inside there was a small plate signed off by Keith Johnson as I...
In my case, perhaps because it is Sunday (?)...doubting anyone at Spectral, and for sure at my dealer, is going to be there to answer my question today. I will talk to my dealer tomorrow or first chance I get.
Oddly enough, I seem to have this issue to my relatively new (9 month) unit. I can't think that it is by design, because the behavior is not consistent. About 2/3 of the time, the first tap changes the source without a problem; but, the other 1/3 it takes a couple of pushes of the button to...
For what it's worth (at least what you are paying for reading this :)), I heard both models that were exhibited at RMAF and was very impressed before I even knew the price (they were being exhibited between the huge Wilson Alexandria XLF room and the Scaena must-be-well-into-six-figures demo...
Brian,
First, welcome to the forum...I think you'll find a lot of good advice here (for sure a "lot" and hopfully "good"). Another suggestion to consider because I think they are tremendous value for the money and are at least in the same zip code as your price range would be the Vandersteen...
Oh, c'mon...there is empty space on that desk and a pair of Orange Blades would really spice the place up! The soundstage would really open up and if you really want that you-are-there experience, I don't think you have a choice. Don't let anyone talk you out of it, just go for it. :)
Does anyone know where in Japan Sony's high-end speakers (e.g., SS-AR1) are manufactured? I have searched and come across many reviews, Sony's white papers, etc. but cannot find a specific reference to where they are produced.
Thanks for any insights.
Russ - congrats on the search and a very successful outcome. I'm a recent Spectral convert too from end-to-end (I bought the 360 monos because I liked the monos in my room architecture and to drive my speakers, but the 260 was equally spectacular when I heard it). I have not had a chance to...
Ha--yea, I couldn't help it :D. I'll do that...I've been holding off while I get used to the entire system (for others, I had replaced my electronics with the DMA 360s and the DMC 30ss preamp), but the CD player just arrived and Ack was very helpful in a few private exchanges during the...
Interesting, fun article. Unfortunately, the comments at the end--and in particular by MF of Stereophile (assuming that is actually him) do not do our hobby any favors if you ask me. I respect his opinions and generally reading his column (although I sometimes disagree), but the need to...
For those who have not seen this by Patrick Dillon...it's a good match for this thread, very funny, and a few of them hit close to home :) All in good humor...

I've been (and still am) a long-time Audio Research aficionado, but recently decided to splurge on my system and bought a new Spectral DMC 30SS, series 2 preamp paired with DMA 360s2 monoblocks. New Spectral/MIT cables as well, so aside from the speakers and CD player, it is new from the ground...
Also high on my "maybe someday..." wishlist :D They look awesome...please post more pics when you have them; and, let us know your impressions! Congrats!!
I've followed Audiogon off and on over the years. I purchased an item a few years ago that was a seamless transaction, but am a relative newbie selling there. Not being an apologist for them; but, I have to say that my experience has been pretty positive. In a few cases, I've had questions or...
I am fine with the option and, absent any other information, think it's a good idea. As I understand it, it is completely the seller's choice, so depending on (obviously) the dollar amount of the item itself and how confident the seller is that it will sell, they can make their own decisions...
I agree with Ack...unless there is something we don't know about the design, it's odd to me that it's required for the 400s and not for the 360s or anything else they sell. Probably easily doable if you live in a city where a dealer is located or close by; not so much if you are in the middle...
Yep--what a great shop! To go with my earlier comments about the slightly more streamlined appearance of the Compas, I thought I'd post a picture of them in Overture's listening room. The pictures of the Compas on Avalon's site are not the best (to me at least), so maybe this helps give a view...
My main purpose was actually to demo the electronics...it was an all-Spectral/MIT setup (DMC 30ss Series 2 reference preamp, DMA-360 series 2 monoblocks, although I also heard the DMA-260 stero amp as well, and Spectral's SDR 4000SL reference CD player), which were spectacular. But, I currently...
Overture in Wilmington, Delaware definitely has a pair as I spent the last two days listening to them....very impressive speaker. Many thanks to Terry @Overture and his staff for their time and hospitality.
I will also be anxious to hear the impressions of anyone who was able to compare the Avior and Atria head-to-head, either in a show setting (RMAF vs. CES for example), or better yet, at a dealer once the Atrias arrive. As I said in an earlier message, the Avior was the first Rockport speaker...
My guess is that quite a few people (relatively speaking of course) will buy it. ARC has never produced an SACD player, so current ARC front end owners and a vast majority of people who don't own (and never will own) many/any SACDs will be the core market for this and will spring for it...
Thanks for the pics! As suggested in narrative somewhere, the Atria looks super attractive to my eye at least and if it sounds half as good as it looks then it will be a hit (realizing that looks are at least as subjective as sound!). I heard the Avior at RMAF and thought it was one of the...
Thanks Ack! Weird..when I go to www.spectralaudio.com and click "bulletins" it is not there. When I elim the "www" as part of that and just go to spectralaudio.com, then click through, it shows up. I knew it wasn't there an hour ago when I looked...not sure why it shows up in one and not the...
Is the DMA-400 overview still posted? I am looking for it in the bulletings and do not see it listed. Of course, the spectralaudio.com website I am looking at appears to be an archived version of something from the mid-1990s at best, but I"m pretty sure that's still the current site :-)...
