My new project has just finished after one and half year of design and preparation.
Started from a completely dismantled DENON DP-80 and worked in small steps to make it really "uber".
Everything is modified or CNC cut from new.
Metals used are aluminum, leaded iron, inox steel, and bronze...
Even a bit late...here's my 2c on the subject.
I love tangential arms.I use them from day one...that is 1983.
My cartridges last forever and my records sound very well preserved for some reason...?
I have heard a lot of other arms but in some way they don't cut it for me.
Maybe my ears and brain...
Three freshly winded power toroids have arrived.
As the amps were bought from USA/Canada the toroids were for 110V input AC power.
In Europe it's 230V and they had to be rewired...
In doing this i have also asked for a bit more juice for certain voltages as i am going to use KT90s
instead of...
Actually there were versions of all their models.
Some of them kept the same name and had a suffix added (like SE -special edition) when the change was substantial like better output transformers.
This applied to preamps and amps as well.
Sometimes it was just a better incarnation of the...
Same as my SEP-3 preamp.
I upgraded to it from a SEP-2 using the trade in program of the local dealer.
What a wonderful machine!
A fully enclosed modern chassis, superb layout with 4X6922s in the main circuit and another 2X6922 in the completely separate phono board (for another 500$),
fully...
Well...how about my version of Mitsu LT-5V and my just acquired Pioneer PL-L1 (it will not stay this way for long...)

Also came four custom CNC cut screws. These are going to replace four of the screws tightening the amp's top.
Their elongated heads will fit in the four plastic cups that will be glued in the tubes' cage.
They also secure in place the custom aluminum plate decorating the amps' top.
They make...
And third is the tubes' protective cage (something this amp was never produced with).
I have two kids, 14 and 8 who are rather active in my living room and although i don't expect them
to touch the tubes when hot, i do expect some cuddly toy or soft ball/pillow to land on them from time to...
?ext came the new feet ,cut from solid bronze with cutouts for a industrial rubber inserts.
Each foot is screwed under the chassis on the original position and then the rubber insert
is glued on place. The rubber has a hole so that i can reach the screw and take of the foot if i want to.
I...
Finally the pieces are starting to gather.
First are the aluminum pieces from the CNC.
The bigger piece is a decorative plate on top of the amp where the tubes are located.
This will be screwed on place (from the underside) and a sheet of Dynamat will be sandwiched
between the existing steel...
Still waiting for the CNC to deliver...
In the meantime i have taken a couple photos from the storage place where three SE-100s are waiting for their transformation.
My friend has pulled back from the cosmetic work (have you heard anything about the financial situation in Greece?)
and so i...
Yes i am.
Right now i am waiting for some special pieces from the CNC shop.
These include aluminum plate for the top,a cosmetic aluminum piece on front,
a cage to protect the tubes from kids hands (and kids hands from tubes) and finally
six solid bronze feet with a cutout for elastic insert.
I...
I can only offer my experience in this...
I used sandwich construction of bronze/aluminum/ bronze separated or should i say "glued" together with thin silicone sheet.
All these were bolted together (with the same torque) making a very heavy and damped chassis...
You can also use something like...
I understand your scepticism...
On my LT-5V i have used a 3cms thick 30X47 cm solid aluminum block as base.
When knocked on it ringed!
Upon checking with an accelerometer, matching two plates from different metals
makes a world of difference on vibration dampening.
Taking the arm out on a heavy...
I have been contacted by George to look at your SP-10II "plinthing" problems!
Funny enough, lately a friend of mine has asked for my opinion on exactly the same project!
So you can say that i have already formulated some thoughts about how i would make such a project.
I would suggest a metal...
I suppose that you are changing the PS BYPASS caps to get better rippling suppression.
As a rule of thump i bypass with 1/100 value but use the higher standard caps that i can find.
It's a safe bet to use higher voltage caps - so for a main PS cap of 400V i wouldn't use as a bypass cap
anything...
I have a friend who owns one.Apart from the visual treat of the spinning weights under the platter, it is a very honest and well designed performer.
And if i'm not mistaken, there is an upgrade route to the big brother Orbe.
That is a real masterpiece (skip the plexi clad version).
I wish i lived in a colder country, like you...
30 KT90s plus 17 odd tubes is a bit too much for my air conditioning during summer...
Music time starts on September and ends on early June...
Rutgar, the spindle is a two part design.Take out the clamp and look closely on the spindle:you will see a small hole near it's base.
Pass through the hole a thin allen key, stop the platter from spinning and turn the spindle in the same direction that you would tighten a screw! That is clockwise...
Rutgar,
please don't use tissue paper...The simple solution is to wrap around the spindle as much tape as to have a snug fit.
Using a small screwdriver open carefully the clamp and without loosing the screws take out the spring.
If you cannot find another spring that is like this but stiffer,you...
Rutgar, the problem of the "thunking" when rotating comes from two reasons:a)the specific records you play have a wider center hole than the spindle b)the spring inside the clamp has become soft and does not press the record tightly against the platter.
I have overcome this problem by a) using a...
My advice:find a second hand DENON DP-59L or DP-72L (preferably with the straight carbon fiber tonearm). They are workhorses and true high end turntables in many aspects.Buy a good cartridge (the best you can afford)!(Tip:throw away the wooden bottom of the chassis and replace it with a solid...
Wow, this thing looks like the axle of a truck!
George i don't think that anyone today uses this type of drive and probably
in the specific one the gearing would be something as simple as in your picture.
In fact 99% of the turntables used today are belt driven.
Very few are "direct drive"...
And this is mine.Pretty much a DIY dream of mine coming true.
The cartridge is a custom Van den hul "The Condor" with silver coils and the phono stage is a Sonic frontiers Phono-1SE+.
Thanks my friend!
When you know that something is going to be your last of anything, you do your best...
And this is going to keep me company till i'm deaf!
