On another subject, Lucas has just upgraded the S/PDIF output of my server and sold me a Wave BNC cable. As you will appreciate this limits PCM to 192, and for other reasons my DSD files are being converted to 176. But my oh my, my system sounds better than ever- so analogue and musical!
Hi all
I would just like to share my experience with a new Auralic Altair.
My system consists of an artisan high end server, a Lampizator Golden Gate 2, Thoress valve amplifiers and horn speakers. For various reasons my server and DAC were going to be out of commission for a month or so...
Agree- thanks to all, especially (for me) Tom.
This subject, complicated as it is, reminds me of a famous occasion when F E Smith ( a learned barrister in the 1920s and later Lord Birkenhead- and I believe Lord Chancellor), who was known for his learned loquaciousness, finished a long-winded...
"DSD Wide" is not PCM. It is a multi-bit (8) two level Pulse Density Modulation pulse stream, like 1-bit two level PDM, where there is still no quantized value ala PCM, but a 8-bit word based relative value from sample to sample like 1-bit two level PDM (DSD), where there is a binary...
I understand your point, but if one is playing a DSD file I can't see why the Lampi approach would ever be SUB-optimal. Surely, the less additional processing the better?
Julf
If you go to www.channelclassics.com>General Info>About recording equipment, it gives quite a bit of detail. I have asked them about EQ/processing and will report back when I get an answer.
Philip
Well, my understanding is that they do no processing or EQ, but in the interests of full accuracy I will investigate further and report back!
I do know they are very purist. They are the one of the organisers of the forthcoming new DL site "nativeDSD.com".
I agree totally with where this "conversation" has got to. And I'm not sure of the answer to the question at the end.
But I do say, long live Channel Classics' DSD recordings which involve no non-DSD elements, and I hope others follow their path.
I find it very strange that, just as the number of DSD downloads becoming available is about to increase markedly, two big DAC companies are saying they are going to convert DSD to PCM before the conversion process. If you do this, what is the point of having the file in DSD in the first place...
Bruce
From your previous knowledge of the Ayre QA-09, where would you put it relative to these five?
Also, have you heard the PS Audio Nuwave Phono Converter?
Thanks
Hi Bruce
One question- since it is the same performance on all ADCs, presumably you sent the feed directly into all 5 ADCs during the performance. Presumably there was no possibility that the feeds were different in any way between the ADCs?
Incidentally, we thought that of the DSD64s 2 was...
I thought I was allowed to guess!!-even if I am wrong!
This afternoon, my son-in-law came round (to give me a tasting of a new wine- wine and music are a match made in heaven!), and I played him the samples. He was even more positive than I that 2 was best. So I await the unveiling on Sunday...
OK- my initial reaction is that the DSD128 recordings are better than the DSD64 except for DSD64 No 2.
I find it hard to distinguish between the DSD64 no 2 and the DSD128s.
I therefore predict that DSD64 no 2 is the Grimm!
At least I've put my money where my mouth is!
