Interesting observation. I'd always thought the rational of shorting the terminals on unused speakers and use the back emf from voicecoil to 'arrest' the acoustically induced sypathetic cone/diaphragm motion. I've found that unshorted midranges on unused but acoustically present speakers can...
Jeffy,
What is the power draw of your server? Is its switching power supply 350 watts or less?
The reason I ask, is that the power draw is a large determinant of how much and the nature of the power filtering that can be effectively implemented. The second question is would you be comfortable...
Ron,
The TVSS provided by the Torus units are certainly not MOV based, though is implemented properly, MOVs are quite effective and non-intrusive.
Actually, Torus uses the exact same series mode surge technology that is used by SurgeX, save for the fact that the Torus doesn't require that 100...
and if you're doing your soldering in anything but a VERY well ventilated environment, or outdoors, especially if using solder containing lead, one should use a fume extractor, like this one from Hakko -
I taught a lab course to Seniors majoring in EE at Brooklyn Polytechnic (now part of...
David,
I'm really quite surprised you see it that way, as from my perspective, you're one of the few here applying 'science' properly. You are going for a 'direct proof/verification'; can an assertion be proved with some statistical certainty, . An 'indirect proof/verification' requires a...
Excellent DIY guide!
For those of us less adept at soldering, I'd recommend an eutectic solder 63/37 (Sn/Pb) rather than 60/40 for its lower melting point and minimizing the possibility of cold solder joints. There are also lead free eutectic solders Sn/Ag/Cu...
A given.
I'd not realized folks were using diodes in their standoffs 60 years ago. Neat.
Is that similar to the ground loop breaker I referenced previously?
And finally, there are ground loop breakers, which placed between a signal ground and the safety ground, can deal with a multitude of...
Hey Dave,
Excellent post! I've also found that the ground conductors characteristics, as well as its geometrical relationship to line and neutral conductors have a substantial impact on both subjective and objective measures. Increased leakage to mains safety ground, Y capacitance, seems to...
Speedskater,
Thanks for the excerpt. If its not too much trouble, you might provide a link, or at least the name of the paper, so I, and others could read it.
TIA,
Paul
Hi David,
I'd a number of reasons...
1. I was being polite, and the comment had no bearing on the 'meat' of my post. Nor did Ralph state anything that I thought theoretically impossible. His hubris might well be justified.
2. While I have read Ott, the possibility of my implementing a...
Ralph,
I've no doubt that a system comprised exclusively of your components would be ground loop/noise free, even with single ended connections. But you don't make digital components, and many less discerning folks might find such an approach limiting....
As DaveC and Speedskater said...
If your intent is to non-invasively/no electrical connection, fully measure currents in situ on av components, rather than with a simplified, partial cycle, physical approximation ala DTCD, you could use a Rogowski probe like the PEM CWTLF or LFR AC current probes...
Not RG-58, but a very good, audio specific coax is the Gotham GAC-1 Ultra Pro. Widely available for less than $1/ft

and for the humblebrag -
The Yale math professor quoted, in a not overly successful effort to be humorous, is my son.
From my limited, and a friend's whose ears I trust, more extensive experience, we found that the 275 performs substantially better when fed a balanced differential signal via the XLR's than when fed a single ended signal via the RCA inputs....FWIW

Its far easier to dismiss something with a thought experiment or as ascribe results to expectation bias, than to empirically investigate.
Would you be happier if it were amethyst or citrine? They're all quartz, just like sand, and piezoelectric.
Heck, a well respected vendor used a component from kitty litter and an inorganic laxative to make very popular power conditioning units, all quite piezoelectric. The Germans often use...
I'd hope that paragraph should be written -
The last thing some high-end manufactures and reviewers want to see is blind testing. The whole industry would be turned upside down and some reviewers would justifiably be out of work.
Some comments on previous posts -
1. At best, only the...
Thanks Don. I was asking in relation to European directives and standards. I believe that Ncore Amp (Acoustic Imagery's Atsah and the Grimm Audio monoblocs) when sold in Europe would fall under EN 61000-3-2 as a class A device...
The Ncore1200 amps typically use the Hypex SMPS1200 switching power supply, which does not have power factor correction. I had thought the CE regulations called for PFC on switching supplies for anything over 70 watt power consumption. Someone commented on another board that this could be done...
As an aside, some power conditioner manufacturers use the term PFC (Power Factor Correction) to refer to an across the line ( X function) capacitor. I believe Furman was the first to do this with a ASC protected motor run polypropylene cap across the line...
Andre,
I agree with you that the DH Labs Mirage USB cable is excellent, I use a 5 meter Mirage and am very happy with it.
But other than subjective superlatives, what I find missing from your review is subjective comparisons. As you said, you've evaluated multiple USB cables, so I'd think a...
My bolding above What you or I think, believe or guess is meaningless unless verifiable empirically.
Opinions are like bodily orifices, everyone has many....
I certainly agree that flipping a cable around, to do whatever dielectric voodoo doesn't do squat.
Or one could check the...
Don,
Excellent points. You're asking me for an indirect proof of directionality, one of causality. I don't have one. I've got some WAGs (wild assed guesses), but they hardly rise to the level of a hypothesis, let alone a theory. I don't like blowing smoke up.... All I have are empirical...

I see your views on directionality have changed. I do hope that change was prompted by empirical investigation.
