I did contribute on the power side - but that was only a small cog in a big wheel, as this was certainly a complex room/ acoustics design (for which I wasn't involved) - but it was very interesting to see it in progress. Key take-away on the power side, was how much each power tweak contributed...
Thank you, Mike and Elliot, for hosting me for a wonderful audition last night. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed the company and the special audio treat. I love that you continue to refine your system, Mike, and strive to achieve that magical illusion of disbelief (coining your words).
Kudos on...
My garage attic is unfinished (no shetrock), so I clamshelled the two halves together and then stretch wrapped them and built a rope hoist system to elevate them to an open bay in the attic, then secured them with shelving racks. worked very well.
Exactly. When one fine tunes and matches the bias of such amps, they need to insure they achieve a minimum internal temperature, and that's three different temperature points for the Mephisto monoblocks. Extracting that convected heat from the room is the key (unless it's winter time).
Thanks Lloyd. I use those for any device where a fan is necessary, and you're right, they're quiet. The problem is that even with the fans, the heat builds up in the room. I have considered a clear acrylic "hat" - positioned slightly above the amps, collecting the heat, and exhausting it outside...
Wonderful post #597, Marty! Very well articulated. I have the same monoblocks, and over the years, have explored other options, but keep solidly footed with the Mephistos. There's just something very special and captivating about them, as you so eloquently stated.
They indeed run very hot - in...
Probably, but a prime objective in this instance was to immerse in concert videos - and with that 80" monitor... wow, immerse, you can. I was enjoying the Pat Metheny DVD - getting a double dose with both the audio and video, watching Pat master his talent.
Hey guys - I had to wrap up work before the holidays, then travel, then figure out how to transcode over 14 hours of video of the M9 installation, then learn how to use Photoshop and Premier Pro to create a brief <7 minute installation video...whew! that was almost harder than the integration of...
Folks -
I ran into a problem when selecting "Save a Local Copy" - I thought that would just be a pointer to a local copy of my new Destination Library, but it can "duplicate" partial albums (with a single track)... not what wanted... I wanted it to use the songs in my existing Destination...
Hi AMR -
I assume you meant the Soundiiz process, converting from, say, Tidal to Qobuz? I started doing it manually (for a friend) and it was insanely painful. Then Ed suggested Soundiiz and it was immensely more efficient - just a matter of minutes (mostly just getting familiar with it).
or...
You are welcome. I used Soundiiz to transfer Tidal over to Qobuz as well, but I could not find a way to move the ROON playlists from one library to another - seems a Playlist file would exist and transfer as well (as Meridian used to have), but no such luck in my search.
V2
FYI - For those that might be transferring their ROON Core and ROON Library to the SGM Extreme and are having difficulty getting the old playlists across, here's how I ended up having to do it. Hope it helps. Wish there had just been a playlist file to copy over, but I sure couldn't find one...
Jeff Fritz hit it spot on. Simply an amazing experience (in my opinion) - effortless, limitless, expansive, spacious, articulate and "realistic" - simply an amazing experience.
Update:
I had an opportunity to hear the system again today, after the Taiko Audio USB card upgraded, and even though it only had about a day of burn in, it just ceases to amaze me how the improvements just keep on going with this system. You'd think it would reach a limit, but it doesn't!
I...
I share your commentary - simply absolutely stunning and exhilarating. An incredible feat of engineering. As you said, they disappear like nothing I have ever heard - ever.
They are as close to real life as one could imagine with unbelievable dynamics and simply amazing sound staging and air...
Hebrog;
Guessing here... but worth a try.
I suspect you may not have the Taiko driver installed, but instead, that of the Chord, which may not accommodate a 4,096 buffer size for low Rez/Redbook files. The buffer is probably set to 4,096, so assuming your input is correctly set, as suggested...
@Taiko team, Wow. I commend you. I had my serious reservations that my ears were good enough to discern differences in sound quality by using a different app, but this was a change where I didn’t even have to A/B... I just knew, right off the bat, things were simply “right.”
My system has come...
Thanks. I also invested in a nice isolation rack as well - things have finally taken a turn for the better, after chasing my tail for years, and are now sounding extremely good. sure was a long journey.
BTW, the AudioQuest NGR outlets accommodate 8 AWG wires and have a nice vise-grip retention. I replaced the FuroTech GTX-DR's with the AQ's because of the grip and the larger wire accommodation (8AWG (fits in the hole) vs 10AWG (which is a challenge)).
Another thing that helped was lowering the...
Hi Germanboxers:
I managed to run 4 AWG to various outlets a couple of different ways.
In one installation, I ran 4AWG stranded wire directly to my dedicated audio outlets by splitting up the strands equally in 4 as in the attached picture. In a subsequent installation, I used a large...
Hi Koegz -
Yes, I have implemented an extensive overhaul in my system (actually, I probably went a little overboard and removed "every single wire' within the house). I rewired the entire house with nothing less than 12 AWG, and I ran 4 AWG for my monoblocks. Before running the 4 AWG, I was...
Hi folks -
I've repaired an Ayre VX-5 Twenty stereo power amplifier for a friend, but not knowing the original power up/down characteristics, I'm wondering if someone with a functional unit would be so kind as to describe their unit?
Here's what I note -
Upon power up:
Rocker switch powered...
Hi Lloyd,
Not yet. I did find a guy with very similar taste to mine, with Mephisto Solos, who made the comparison between a few preamps, inclusive of the Pandora, vs. the MSB Select II direct, and he preferred direct, so that was helpful input. He said direct “lifted the veil” as well. Given...
Hi Lloyd,
I did not. I jumped straight into the monoblocks. At the time, I was driving’s really heavy load, the Magico Q5’s,which needed help in the bass region, so I figured the extra reserve might help. It was better than with the stereo Colosseum, but I’m not sure how it would stack up to...
Hi Number9,
In my case, I already had a preamp, so it wasn't a factor of justifying the investment in the MSB DAC. I had the VAC Signature MKIIa - a wonderful preamp by all means, but when I made the comparison with the MSB direct, it was, as most describe, as though a veil had been lifted -...
