Last year just prior to The 2024 Dallas Southwest Audiofest in March I began to toy with the idea of acquiring a pair of monoblocks. I have worked many shows over the years and as a result have heard many, many pieces of beautiful sounding equipment out there in the Audio Ether. If you were fortunate enough to have a listen to the Locrian Audio room, you heard some of my work.
I’m way past the time when I might have spent gobs of money on a component as I have learned money is not always a guaranty of quality or musicality in this scenario. Beyond not wanting to spend a fortune my only other prerequisite is that which I might purchase had to sound better than what I have had in the past. That opens a can of worms doesn’t it! But as we all know when you get to a certain level of musicality switching components is not always better musically but more likely just different from what we have already.
I began to browse through the offerings of companies I know already as well as some of the newer companies that have manifested in the audio industry over the last ten years or so. I have to say I have nothing but respect for those minds out there that take their ideas and somehow are able to bring those ideas to fruition, which brings us to AGD.
After much searching and kind of by accident, don’t you love those unexpected accidents that lead you down a road unintended? I ran across some online videos and reviews of a company called AGD Productions.
I found the user comments and reviews of the AGD stable to be very interesting. So I emailed AGD which began a conversation with Alberto Guerra who happens to own the company. I have to say Alberto is an amiable, pleasant fellow to have a conversation with as well as with a great sense of humor. I wrote some articles for Native DSD about the Dallas Show last year where I mentioned how he was one of my favorite new personalities on the audio scene. If you get a chance to have a conversation with him I expect you will enjoy it. Our conversation progressed to the point where I was interested enough to arrange for a demo pair of the Duet’s to listen to.
I never made time to learn an instrument but I do immensely enjoy listening to music. My interest in audio equipment revolves around how lifelike, how real, how musical, all those phrases and words that we use to describe what we want out of our audio equipment and what makes listening to music such a wonderful experience. More than not I don’t much care about the tech... Well… I suppose that’s not quite true. What then do I care about?
The above of course but also does the music wash over me bringing out some form of reaction peace, emotion, toe tapping. Is the music involving, and so on. Which is just what happened when I first heard the AGD Duets. From the first notes that hung in the air there was an immediate palpable lifelike experience of music flowing through these musical devices. The Duets have dynamics in spades while at the same time allowing the more delicate notes of instruments and fullness and breath of voices to come through clearly. I found these amps to be extremely well balanced throughout the audio spectrum.
Imagine listening to a pair of your favorite amps with your favorite music. Now imagine instruments, voices, space, soundstage becoming more three dimensional and solid right before your ears. That’s what happens through the Duets. Did I mention lifelike? I found myself hearing more of the nuances of music not knowing before that there was a bit of lack if you will, prior in the musical presentation. It wasn’t long after hearing those first notes that I suddenly became aware that I had somehow drifted away from trying to identify superlatives of the listening experience to simply enjoying the music.
I have a pleasant routine in the morning. I’m up around 7am. I make a pour over coffee for the wife, for those who drink coffee have you tried Sulawesi? Very smooth! I then go on to make an espresso or a latte for myself. I generally have toast from some day old fresh baked Khorazan bread and turn on the music.
The music plays most of the day just about every day as I try to be retired. I then go about attending to the things of the day. A little writing, emails, photo processing, phone calls etc.. with the music playing in the background.
After listened to the Duets virtually every day over this last year come March, after being just as pleased now as when I first heard these monoblocks, after running just about every type of of music through these musical devices, I’m still happy with the musical presentation of the Duets.
So what was the outcome of my search? As you may have deduced I purchased the pair of AGD Duets. That pretty much says it all I suppose, doesn’t it?
I don’t know but I suspect AGD Production will be at the 2025 Dallas South West Audiofest. If they do show in Dallas swing by their room if your’e there and satisfy that curiosity you might be having over the AGD offerings.
Just so you know. I purchased the AGD Duets with my own money. I was not asked to write any kind of review. AGD has not seen this article prior to the posting of it. I contribute this article to the music loving masses out there in the Audio Ether. Because, well… that’s just part of what I do these days.
Happy listening.
