Last year just prior to The 2024 Dallas Southwest Audiofest in March I began to toy with the idea of acquiring a pair of monoblocks. I have worked many shows over the years and as a result have heard many, many pieces of beautiful sounding equipment out there in the Audio Ether. If you were fortunate enough to have a listen to the Locrian Audio room, you heard some of my work.

I’m way past the time when I might have spent gobs of money on a component as I have learned money is not always a guaranty of quality or musicality in this scenario. Beyond not wanting to spend a fortune my only other prerequisite is that which I might purchase had to sound better than what I have had in the past. That opens a can of worms doesn’t it! But as we all know when you get to a certain level of musicality switching components is not always better musically but more likely just different from what we have already.

I began to browse through the offerings of companies I know already as well as some of the newer companies that have manifested in the audio industry over the last ten years or so. I have to say I have nothing but respect for those minds out there that take their ideas and somehow are able to bring those ideas to fruition, which brings us to AGD.

After much searching and kind of by accident, don’t you love those unexpected accidents that lead you down a road unintended? I ran across some online videos and reviews of a company called AGD Productions.

I found the user comments and reviews of the AGD stable to be very interesting. So I emailed AGD which began a conversation with Alberto Guerra who happens to own the company. I have to say Alberto is an amiable, pleasant fellow to have a conversation with as well as with a great sense of humor. I wrote some articles for Native DSD about the Dallas Show last year where I mentioned how he was one of my favorite new personalities on the audio scene. If you get a chance to have a conversation with him I expect you will enjoy it. Our conversation progressed to the point where I was interested enough to arrange for a demo pair of the Duet’s to listen to.

I never made time to learn an instrument but I do immensely enjoy listening to music. My interest in audio equipment revolves around how lifelike, how real, how musical, all those phrases and words that we use to describe what we want out of our audio equipment and what makes listening to music such a wonderful experience. More than not I don’t much care about the tech... Well… I suppose that’s not quite true. What then do I care about?

The above of course but also does the music wash over me bringing out some form of reaction peace, emotion, toe tapping. Is the music involving, and so on. Which is just what happened when I first heard the AGD Duets. From the first notes that hung in the air there was an immediate palpable lifelike experience of music flowing through these musical devices. The Duets have dynamics in spades while at the same time allowing the more delicate notes of instruments and fullness and breath of voices to come through clearly. I found these amps to be extremely well balanced throughout the audio spectrum.

Imagine listening to a pair of your favorite amps with your favorite music. Now imagine instruments, voices, space, soundstage becoming more three dimensional and solid right before your ears. That’s what happens through the Duets. Did I mention lifelike? I found myself hearing more of the nuances of music not knowing before that there was a bit of lack if you will, prior in the musical presentation. It wasn’t long after hearing those first notes that I suddenly became aware that I had somehow drifted away from trying to identify superlatives of the listening experience to simply enjoying the music.

I have a pleasant routine in the morning. I’m up around 7am. I make a pour over coffee for the wife, for those who drink coffee have you tried Sulawesi? Very smooth! I then go on to make an espresso or a latte for myself. I generally have toast from some day old fresh baked Khorazan bread and turn on the music.

The music plays most of the day just about every day as I try to be retired. I then go about attending to the things of the day. A little writing, emails, photo processing, phone calls etc.. with the music playing in the background.

After listened to the Duets virtually every day over this last year come March, after being just as pleased now as when I first heard these monoblocks, after running just about every type of of music through these musical devices, I’m still happy with the musical presentation of the Duets.

So what was the outcome of my search? As you may have deduced I purchased the pair of AGD Duets. That pretty much says it all I suppose, doesn’t it?

I don’t know but I suspect AGD Production will be at the 2025 Dallas South West Audiofest. If they do show in Dallas swing by their room if your’e there and satisfy that curiosity you might be having over the AGD offerings.

Just so you know. I purchased the AGD Duets with my own money. I was not asked to write any kind of review. AGD has not seen this article prior to the posting of it. I contribute this article to the music loving masses out there in the Audio Ether. Because, well… that’s just part of what I do these days.

Happy listening.

Thank you for the wonderful story and information. Is there a particular reason you chose that version of their amplifiers? Can you also tell me what Preamp you using and what speakers are using?

Hi jahatl513:

As far as a reason I chose these amps instead of other offerings by AGD, Power!!! 300 watts pure musical raw power defining every note into each speaker, not that I could ever truly use that much power, but the headroom is what I was after, what I have always been after. I don’t want to have to turn up the volume to hear that mid base note or the impact of the music. Unless the wife is out shopping and I want to, of course. We are all just kids aren’t we? I wonder if we ever grow up!!

And of course this is one of countless topics that audiophile music lovers like to argue over.. or should I say have strong opinions about. To be honest they are all right and wrong depending on one’s opinions of any particular subject. One of those duality of truth things it would seem.

From being fortunate enough to have owned a system with gobs of power to having listened to 300B tubes in SET amps, the extreme on either end of the topic. Both sound beautiful. Some will love SET’s and some will love monstrous 500 watt plus amps. I loved them both! My current choice revolves around a desire for a solid impactful sense of space in the music that I listen to.

As I am approaching my seventieth year of life, just can’t believe I have to say that :) I decided to downscale from a multi component system to as few components as possible and still have the delusion of real music.

To answer your other questions, I have owned for many years the Ayon CD-35 signature SACD CD, USB pre amp. I also run my ZET-1 Turntable through the small Transrotor phono stage to the Analog input of the CD-35 to musically satisfying results. For the USB I use Roon. A while back I took every CD I had and converted them to Apple’s version of Flac and have that as my digital library if you will. And as you know I now have the AGD pair of Duet monoblocks.

My favorite speakers are the German Phyisks Omni directional speakers. I have worked with German Physiks many times over the years. The German Physiks are magical I aspire for a pair of these probably the HRS 130’s.

For the moment I am using the Duevel Bella Luna Diamanté Omni directional speakers And yes, I have had a few high end box speakers over the years. But Omni directional is a more natural pleasing to the ear sound, in my opinion that is. And we are back to where we began.

I have the AGD Duets driven directly by the Playback Designs MPS-8 variable volume control, no preamp, with YG Hailey 3 speakers. I'm comparing the Duets with some other amps, no definite conclusions yet, but I'm very happy with this set-up, and I plan to use the AGD amps in the summer since I don't have AC.

That combination looks well thought out and very interesting. I can just imagine how musical that must sound. The Hailey’s are beautiful speakers. How large is your room?

The RexII did generate some heat I will admit, but not so much that I couldn’t enjoy them most of the time. As we both know there is no perfect amp or speaker. I don’t mean to imply the the Duets are the end all be all. I dearly loved my Vac 140 monoblocks when I had them and I loved the Bat Rex II stereo amp. They met the need at that time as the Duets meet the need at this time for me.

It’s difficult to verbalize what the Duets are doing so well. The removing of veils perhaps. A greater sense of openness? A life likeness that is uniquely their own. There is something very natural in the sound and you can hear that in the musical presentation.

I am interested in two amplifiers for my system.
First amplifier is the Moon 761 and the second is AGD Duets. My system is a twofold system combining home theater with 2-channel.
My system consists of Moon 390 network player, ATI 4005 amp (5 channel) and Sonus Faber Sonetta V speakers. How would AGD Duets play with my components? Anyone have experience with the Moon 761? Any recommendations or thoughts. Thanks.

I also have a pair of the AGD duets that I bought about a year ago. I chose them, rather than another model, because of the higher power and because they had the latest power supply which Alberto recommended.

For other duet owners , have you found any feet or supports that make them sound better? They’re so small and light I’m having trouble finding something. I’m thinking of a single Well Float.

Alsatian:

Yes the updated power supply, the watt output and the upgradable capability of the Duets also swayed me.

My favorites are LiveVibe Audio, talk to Robert he knows his stuff! Do read the many reviews going back to the nineties on LiveVibe vibration control products every positive thing that has been said is true. They used to be called Starsound.

This is also true of BDR Sound Enhancement This was DJ Casser’s baby up until he died several years ago. A very nice couple Kathy & Dann carry on his legacy. I wish there were more folks like these in the industry. BDR make carbon Fiber boards, pucks, cones and many other products for audio. Yes one can hear a difference when you install these products.

If one can’t hear the difference in these two products move on to something else there is no right or wrong.

When one starts to talk component feet or supports everything seems to make an impact either for good or not so good. Although come to think of it I have seen many beautiful racks that seem to make no improvement at all other than siphon off our cash reserves.

In my experience an audio rack and the cones or footers that come with the rack should have an immediate and obvious effect on the sound. It’s up to the listener to judge the good or bad of that effect. Otherwise we shouldn’t waste our money.

Esing:

I am not familiar with the 761. I think the obvious choice for your purpose is to place the Duets in the 2 channel position. But this is out of my knowledge base. Good luck and have fun.
