I agree very much to the written paper. Very interesting read. Thank you for posting.
Well, I have to say that I get this feeling by playing deep bass rich psy-trance music. As they say the bass aren’t directional - but I feel and hear the direction from where the bass is coming from.. at least in my system. This feeling is so cool, and is very very near a physical massage. And yes, I have bass coming from each of the four corners to make this happen.

Have not read the paper yet, but while it is true that deep bass in a room is effectively nondirectional, and many (most of mine, anyway) music sources mix deep bass to mono, subwoofers have response well above the normal "nondirectional" range (usually considered 80 Hz or so). Crossovers are not brick walls dropping the signal to 0 on either side of the crossover frequency, so there can still be energy an octave or more above the sub's crossover that may be perceived as directional.

Even deep bass sources can have higher-frequency energy that is directional, such as percussives from drums, cymbals, piano hammers, etc.
