Don't know why but this reminds me of a story
. I am interviewing for a VP of engineering job at a video hardware company. They have me interview with the people would be my direct reports (always an awkward situation). I get through all of them 'till I get to the last guy who was the chief technical guy. He starts the interview immediately with a physics puzzle question: "if you have a boat, and you put X weight in it, how much does it sink" or some such thing. I had a flashback to high-school when I was thought stuff like this but no longer remember any of it. I thought I had two options: struggle through it or just flat out say I don't know. I chose the latter, smiled and simply said I don't know, thinking that this is going to upset the applecart. To my surprise, he said he was very happy with my answer! I asked why? He said because you smiled! He continued to say he was very happy to see me not get upset or make up an answer. And that since I was going to be his boss, my pleasant demeanor was important to him!
Now you know why I am not afraid of being wrong in these tests
.
