Let me begin by confessing I am a complete neophyte - I know nothing about music hardware. I would like to set up a modest home audio system. I am not interested in having an FM capability - I simply want to play recorded music at home. I last bought an audio system in 1978 and needless to say times have changed. Please offer suggestions re:

1. The kind of device that "plays" the song - the thing that is analogous to my record player. Would this be an mp3 player?

2. What kind of amplifier (rating, brand) you would suggest - I live in an apartment and do not want or need loud volume

3. What kind of speakers you would suggest.

Apart from my utter ignorance about the technology, I am also not an audiophile - I listen to music mostly for nostalgia, not to appreciate the subtle nuances. Given all this, I hope I will not need to spend a lot of the green stuff. I also want to be able to use headphones.

I still have a Harmon Kardon 330C receiver from my 1970s sound system. Have not used it at all in the past 25 years. What do you think would be a fair selling price?

Thanks in advance.

This may be heresy. Or is it blasphemy? I would suggest The SONY WH1000Mk3 headphones paired to your smartphone. A protable bluetooh speaker would also be useful.
I owned the Harmon Kardonn 330c. It was stolen in a Burglary. I suggest you keep it.

Am I to understand that my old Harmon Kardon receiver could function as the amplifier to drive the speakers? In short, can I connect the audio output of a digital device like an mp3 player (or even a smartphone) to the Harmon Kardon, and then have the Harmon Kardon drive the speakers?
