The BBC has just announced it is to launch a paid for version of iPlayer in America as part of a major expansion of its commercial activities.
The Chairman said the subscription service would ofeer US viewers "programmes they wouldn't otherwise get, shocasing British actors and our programme makers and celebrating our culture."
The launch of the US based iPlayer follows the £129m sale to US firm AMC Networks, makers of Breaking Bad, of a 49.9% stake in BBC America.
No more info at the moment so don't know if it will br just TV or will include their FM radio broadcasts.
Will post more info as it becomes available.

Oh. Did not know they sold the player and its content rights to AMC. What happened to it being part of the fee UK people payed for their "antenna" use?

I presume it all gets ploughed back into financing the BBCs services. There is a big review of the BBC just getting under way with some big commercial interests like Sky trying to cut it back and local newspapers feeling the heat from their local news operations. The BBC will fight back hard and has huge public support so could get interesting.
Some problems with licence fee collection and talk of moving to the German system where the fee is property based but early days.
