What do you get when you combine a lifelong addiction to audio and the personality of a psychiatrist? MOBIUSMAN, a.k.a Russ! Anyone who has read any of my “new thread” posts during the past several years knows that when I start a new thread, I try to combine life with audio, rather what I am inclined to do and combine my audio-nerdiness with audio. By this I mean as I age (now 67) and start to think about what really matters in life and what role audio plays, my sense of what is important is shifting.
This little ditti is merely my latest reflections on this front, and kind of ironic that it is occurring while in the midst of my most expensive, elaborate and best sounding sequence of audio acquisitions of my entire audio history. During the past 15 months, I have upgraded my already quite respectable system with new equipment from every sector, including three new, not Audiogon (a rare experience for me) Spectral Reference pieces, Vivid Giya speakers, new VPI turntable with Benz Micro cartridge, Vibraplane, Pass phono preamp, two Steve Blinn custom ultrawide racks, at least six digits worth of MIT wires, cables and cords and probably an equal amount of other purchases that I do not even remember. Oh yeah, also a 70 inch SUHD flat screen.
As we all know, equipment may be wonderful, but it cannot blossom unless it is in the right setting. This post is about a $28.99 audio device called the X-Mini™ UNO Capsule Speaker™ | Portable Speaker With Ceramic Driver, that when plugged into your phone or computer sounds amazing for the price and size especially when in the right environment.

I plugged the X-Mini into my MacBook Pro and turned on Spotify in an amazing setting, a deck outside of a log cabin in the woods near Asheville, NC. In less than 20 seconds my love and I were so moved by the overall experience with the X-Mini providing the audio that we shed our clothes and started dancing under the stars. It was one of the best audio experiences I have ever had and not a power cord in sight! It was wonderful because of the company, my feelings about her and the fact that we were staying in the woods in a 100+ year-old log cabin outside of Asheville, NC. The X-Mini was the catalyst that brought on the naked dancing.

The overall experience was incredible because it did not come through my ears, but came directly from my heart, a much better pathway than my declining ears. While like most of us on this site, I have had many wonderful listening experiences listening to my ever evolving system in my music chair, but last night will stand out in my memory because of the totality of the experience, while my previous listening chair experiences blend together until I get the next great piece of equipment or recording.
