I'm considering an older Constellation Preamp (Virgo 2 or Pictor) with the idea of eventually mating it to an Inspiration 2 Amp. Does anyone have familiarity with either of these models and which is better? I'm also considering the new Inspiration 2 preamp but can actually save some $ with the Virgo or the Pictor. thanks.

I own a Pictor preamplifier (equipped with the optional DC filter), which I upgraded from the Inspiration 1.0 Pre. This upgrade resulted in significant improvements in transparency, resolution, and overall refinement.

Even when initially paired with an Inspiration Stereo amplifier, the Pictor clearly demonstrated itself as a more sophisticated product compared to the Inspiration Pre 1.0. I later upgraded the Inspiration Stereo amplifier to the matching Taurus Stereo model. While this upgrade also brought noticeable improvements, they weren't as dramatic as those experienced when upgrading from the Inspiration Pre to the Pictor preamplifier. I haven't had the opportunity to test the Virgo preamplifier in my own system (only in a dealer's setup), but I understood that the Revelation series represents the optimal value proposition within the Constellation Audio range.

I would recommend considering the Pictor, and especially the Virgo, over the Inspiration 2 preamplifier, particularly if they can be found at comparable or lower prices than the Inspiration 2 series.

I upgraded from the Inspiration amp and preamp to the Revelation amp and Pictor preamp several years ago. I feel it made a big difference in audio performance. I have no experience with the Virgo. A major difference between Pictor and Virgo is you get 6 inputs with Pictor and 8 inputs with Virgo. That may be important to you. The Virgo was considerably more expensive than Pictor. It was in the series that was just below the top in their line. I can tell you that the Pictor I have, which includes the optional DC filter, is outstanding. Whether I would hear a difference using the Virgo, I can't say. I have enjoyed my Constellation equipment from the git-go. In my opinion, they make great equipment. Good luck on your journey.
