I have a question that i need to ask a copyright expert. If you identify yourself as such - I will pm the question. I don't want things to get rowdy or people to fly off the handle with false info.

I PM'd the OP, just need to make sure it's not in conflict with Firm clients and if it is a general question, I'm happy to guide him in the right direction.
Given that I have pending matters for clients -even though I'm now retired from full time practice, and consulting my firm, I'm reluctant to get into public debates over the law.

I appreciate that. A couple of years ago I had a question in that area. My attorney recommended another lawyer who specialized in that matter for me to consult with as their practice didn't include copyright. I went there and the attorney was qualified. But he unfortunately represented clients on the other side of fence from the idea I had in mind :). So the discussion was not productive. Interestingly enough, he cited one case which I was also familiar with but did not know the details of it as a reason for me to not pursue the idea I was going after. Well, that verdict was overturned a year or so later!

Both patents and copyright laws are in dire need of refreshing for the modern age.....

Copyright issues are country dependent - but anyway I would like to see a thread on these matters. Questions such as - if you buy a HIRez file are you legally allowed to use a CD version of it? - seem not to have simple and logical answers.

They are indeed, although in the case of the U.S. and Canada that gap is about to close. The Harper government is committed to pushing through a Bill that more closely represents U.S. legislation, which I think is much more restrictive.

I'm not going to get on a soapbox here, but I do believe that U.S. copyright law is there to protect corporations first and foremost....consumer be damned.

A lawyer can serve but one master.

Supposedly so do real estate agents, but they will sell you out in a heartbeat in order to make a sale. I’ve had real estate agents that are working for the sellers tell me that the sellers are getting divorced and they are desperate to make a sale. How ethical is that?

Actually the real estate agent almost always works for the seller. I cringe when I watch the House and Garden shows where the agent "negotiates" on the buyers behalf. The price goes up with no partcipation by the buyer. The buyer ideally should have his own lawyer and agent. The agent does not get paid if there is no sale. The higher the price the higher the commission.

I've received some clarity (and more confusion ) on my intended subject. Due to the complexity and gray areas...lets just call this one closed...for now.

And thanks again for even considering an answer. I understand the conflict of interest in my question and honor your position :)
