I'm hearing good things about this film and that it is Steve Carell's defining role and could get some Academy nominations come Oscar time including a nomination for best film, actor and director. Steve Carell is barely recognizable in the film

The true story of John Dupont

Saw his interview about this film. Definitely seems like an intense movie with great acting by Carell. Good to see comedians show real acting from time to time. Reminds me of the late Robin Williams and Good Will Hunting.

My nephew played the school janitor in Good Will Hunting

I saw the movie last night in Manhattan. It is an excellent, well-crafted, fascinating but dark and TRUE story. Phenomenal acting by Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffulo. The problem is that the studio listed all 3 names above the marquee which will confuse the academy voters who hate when studios do that. That's what happened in The Butler and because it was so confusing who was in a lead role or a supporting role, nobody got nominated. Too bad as Oprah had an Oscar worthy performance as supporting actress in that movie. The same might happen to Carrell. Personally, I thought he was a supporting actor, as was Mark Ruffolo, whereas the only actor who should get nominated for best actor was Channing Tatum. Very stupid move on the part of the studio as all 3 are worthy of nominations. Don't be surprised when Oscar night comes and you hear "The Oscar for best actor goes to....Channing Tatum". He really was that good.

I saw the film yesterday and thought it was a very riveting dark story. Acting was indeed wonderful but Channing Tatum although excellent doesn't get my vote for Best Actor as that IMO still lies between Eddie Redmayne in The Theory Of Everything and J. K. Simmons in Whiplash. I agree about Steve Carell. He was mind boggling creepy good. I understand he went through three hours of make up daily. The story is based on John C du Pont son of the wealthy duPont family who lives under the strict rule of his mother and how he almost bows in supplication to her as he hands her a medal he himself won for wrestling. The man obviously has a screw loose and is something short of a six pack in brains. Nonetheless he has a fascination for wrestling and works to make his home the training facility for the 1988 US Olympic team which includes Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) and his older brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo) who serves as an assistant coach under du Pont. I thought a lot of the story was not told but left to the imagination of the viewer and seemed to drag in places. My wife didn't specially like the movie because it was so dark.

As Marty says, it will be interesting to see if Steve Carell is nominated and in which category. Clearly the best role of his acting career. He was scary and creepy good however I do agree that he was in a Best Supporting Role and if nominated in that category could easily win based on what I have seen to date

Is it Best picture.....close but just not there for me but I expect it to be nominated

Definitely a thumb's up and worth seeing. I'd give it 4/5 stars

We saw this yesterday and I was disappointed, especially with the pacing and editing. The performances were excellent. Unfortunately, they needlessly altered the timeline of actual events...sigh

The real Mark Schultz does not appear to be so happy with the final outcome of this story and contests that they made it out to look like there was a sexual relationship. He has been slamming the director in every public way he can and vows to get back at him for leaving the viewers with that thought by the end of the movie.

I will still see this one because it interests me as well as the fact that I have toured the estate of Du Pont, which is about an hour from me.
