During the many slow moments during this years Oscar telecast, our guests starting offering ideas of movies that others might have missed. Thought it would be fun to have WBF member's recommendations of the odd and overlooked movies...I'll start with a few:
"To Catch A Thief" 1955
Cary Grant plays a retired jewel thief who must prove his innocence when expensive jewels start disappearing on the Riviera. With Grace Kelly. Cary Grant's facial expressions at the dock are priceless...
"Inside Man" 2006
Clive Owen, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster and Chiwetel Ejiofor headline a stellar cast in Spike Lee's bank robbery caper.
"Children of Men" 2006
Directed by Alfonso Cuaron ("Gravity") and starring Julianne Moore, Clive Owen and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the adaption of PD James' dystopian novel where women have stopped having babies. A couple of quibbles...in the book the 'f bomb' was only used once and with great effect; it's featured dialogue in the movie to its detriment. A key scene in the book happens in a church but in the movie its in a school. Otherwise, a very good movie
"Lawrence of Arabia" 1962
Peter O'Toole's first staring role. Yes, it's long and the pacing is slow, but the cinematography is exceptional as is the story.
"The Fog of War" 2003
I love documentaries and this a great one. Directed by Errol Morris of "Thin Blue Line Fame"; this is the story of Robert McNamara, the former whiz kid CEO of Ford who became Defense Secretary during the Vietnam war.
