Hi - looking for an MC cartridge to (maybe) replace my Miyajima Takumi L - I like it‘s overall tonality but 0.21 mV is a little too low for my current setup. Sound should be on the full, bold, rich, colorful and musical side rather than analytical or neutral.
… a suggestion I got is the Audio Technica AT-ART9XI - but I am not really convinced it will sound as good as the Takumi L - bigger Miyajimas have 0,23 instead of 0,21 mV… but as far as I can tell that won’t make much difference in the output level… so really looking for alternative options…
Merry Chrismas,
Dynavector xv- 1s have nice full midrange.
Emt jsd 6 voices sound very natural and the bass has real punch. Emt have three coil option from 0.3mv up to 1.0mV.

EMT jsd 6 ( 1/2coil 0.5mv 12 ohm) and 1/4 coil 0.3mV 6ohms)
Dynavector 0.3mV 6 ohms
What step up ration have the sut? 1: 20 works both no problem with the ypsilon 65db gain enough.

SUT has Step Up Ratio 1:20 and built for systems with medium impedance, thus 10-20 ohm would be optimal/is recommended... Ypsilon only has 39bb gain, so 0,21 mV as with my Miyajima is a lillte low (though I really do like the sound, just have to turn up the volume quite high for 80+ db listening)... Would love a Miyajima with a little higher output, bus they are all around 0,21 and 0,23 mV...

… could do… or even just live with/get used to having to turn the volume up to 60% for really high volume and live with that really little and tolerable amount of hum… only an issue on 85+ dbs of listening volume anyways… so I might just leave things the way they are… system is dead quiet up to 75-80 db or 50% volume… just checking on alternatives…
… how do you calculate the amount of higher volume/db per 0,1 mV? Just being curious… been trying to figure out what 0,23 opposed to 0,21 for example would do in terms of gain…

Ypsilon 39db + 1:20 sut 26db =65db gain.
I'm not a fan of SUT with a higher gear ratio as 1:20. The parasitic capacitance increases and the bandwidth usually decreases. If it's not done well, the dynamics are also reduced. I would advise you to try an EMT 0.5mV. But I prefer low-impedance systems, e.g. a ZYX 4 ohms 0.24mV sounds better than 8 ohms 0.48mV. They harmonize better with SUT. My opinion

… ah, now I get it, thanks. Will try a few different options over the next few months and see what happens … could even end leaving things the way they are - maybe just a question of getting used to…

As long as the noise isn't so loud that it interferes with listening to music, I wouldn't worry about it. If Ypsilon had a true balanced output XLR (+6db) it would have been perfect i think, pity.
P.S forget to ask you use xlr output preamp and input amp?

.... you can actually only hear it hum when the needle is lifted and volume is set to play at 85db+ (so volume in preamp turned up to 60%)... otherwise even the noise floor of the record is higher... as soon as I turn the volume below 50% (which is good for volumes of 75-80db downwards) it`s dead quiet... just not used to it... so maybe just a question of time... still interesting to hear alternatives though...
It's fairly new. I became interested when Fremer reviewed the EX1000. He really said some things about it that I've never heard him say. Like that it tracked better than any other cartridge he'd ever tested. He also said the midrange was the most realistic he'd ever heard. That one is too much for me even at dealer cost. So, I opted for the EX500. I haven't compared it to the 1000, but this one tracks better than any other cartridge I've had too. The mids are eerily real and present. But it also has serious slam and jump factor. Myles Astor at Positive Feedback also just posted a very favorable review. I think we'll be hearing more about this line in the future.
