Otari MX 55 T-M slow speed on FF and REW

I have problem with my Otari MX 55
it plays fine but when on REW or FF, it gets very slow
is it because of the tape? (AMPEX 456 NOS) or is it because of the motor
what might be the cheapest way to check and possibly fix?
anyone out there with similar issue?

Look at the heads and tapepath for residue. Ampex 456 is known sticky shead syndrone tape. Needs dehidrating and a wipe with Nufinsh car wax.
