I would like to purchase an Ortofon RMG-212i, it is new but comes without a headshell. The owner says that this arm is exclusively for the SPU-G - Ortofon G-type cartridge, I am not familiar with it.

Nevertheless, I found three cartridges within my budget, the SPU E, the SPU Classic GM MkII and the SPU Classic GM E MkII, I have no idea how they sound.

Any recommendations, do I need a SUT or head amp?

One of them and a SUT?
Have a look at https://medialux.blog/2018/04/ for comments on the sound signature of SPUs. I only know the Royal N but it was this blog that led me to it and I’m glad it did.

Thanks Yeti,

I saw the mediakux blog last night, very interesting. The Japanese have been buying American and British equipment since the early sixties, they knew the stuff and they payed better..

Nevertheless, I still cannot find what SPU will fit the RMG 212i.

Ortofon Denmark and Ortofon US never answered my emails. However, there is an owners manual on Vinyl Engine but it is written in Japanese, only the specs are in English, I am still in limbo.

Cheers,

Any G-style SPU will work equally well with the RMG-212i. A-style SPUs, such as the current SPU Wood A, will require the APJ-1 adapter.
