Sad to see our home town on the list at #7: http://autos.yahoo.com/news/the-worst-traffic-in-america--it-s-not-los-angeles.html

These cities had the worst traffic in 2011, according to Inrix, which lists the average hours wasted per driver after each city:
10) Chicago – 32.8 hours
9) Boston - 35 hours
8) Austin – 30 hours
7) Seattle – 33 hours
6) Washington, D.C. – 45 hours
5) Bridgeport, CT – 42 hours
4) New York – 57 hours
3) San Francisco – 48 hours
2) Los Angeles – 56 hours
1) Honolulu – 58 hours

Must have taken some effort to beat LA!

The issue with LA is a combination of congestion and long travel distances. It tickles me in shows like NCIS Los Angeles when the detectives hop into their teleporter muscle car in Venice and wind up at the same time of day in Echo Park or Pomona, for an invigorating mass kill or perp net, and wind up back in Venice without looking like they drove anywhere.

Surprised that Houston and Atlanta aren't on that list, lots of complaints from residents.

I wonder where Toronto, ON would have listed. The "King's Highway" or "MacDonald-Cartier Freeway" or simply the "401", is known to be the busiest freeway in North America. On peak days it sees in excess of 500,000 cars on one 10km stretch running across the city. Having travelled it for the last 25 years, I can attest that on most days its a nightmare of congestion!

When I first moved down to Charlotte, rush hour traffic was considered more than 5 cars at a stop light. Not kidding either. Many folks complain a lot about I-85, 485 near Pineville and I-77 but after living near DC for the first 20 or so years of my life? I can honestly say that they haven't experienced any bad traffic yet. Last time I visited DC, I was headed to Baltimore. It took me [from Charlotte] about 7 or 8 hours to get very close to Dulles Airport and then an additional 3 and a half hours plus to get to Baltimore. That's traffic, not a 20 minute delay in your daily commute.

After looking at that list, Honolulu looks to be a nightmare. I already know from experience that L.A. is a nightmare. It would have been quicker to fly into Las Vegas and drive to San Bernadino than to fly into LAX and head to San Bernadino. Sad. If memory serves, that commute took us close to 6 hours and I think it was only a 75 mile or so commute!

Wow can't believe Las Vegas, the home of the five minute red light, isn't that!

Actually, I can't believe Honolulu. The city is tiny even in rush hour traffic you can get from end to end on the H1 in no time. Same with all the major surface streets.

It makes me appreciate my seven minute commute. :D
Small places have their benefits.

can't believe Atlanta is not on that list. The ATL metro area is huge, and it can take 1.5 hrs to get across it on a good day.

Then again...
Once, I went around that loop at 145 MPH!

I thought 90mph was the norm down there....and you are still being passed on a normal day...

Typo for NY? Actually, I never drive in Manhattan, only to leave and return. Intelligent use of subways, express buses and taxis (and feet) makes getting around efficient.

True, but this was at night with a driver who was more than somewhat blitzed. He was testing a glass of scotch that was on the dashboard to see how fast he could go before it spilled. Also, he was throwing CDs out the sunroof because he liked how they glittered in the moonlight. It was a totally insane evening, and I was really scared. Being trapped inside a car with a maniac will do that to you.

The experience took place in the late 1980's, but I am not likely to ever forget it. The car was a Mercedes S class, and I remember him saying, "Not bad for a taxicab." A few months later, he wrecked the car on the same loop.

I am flabbergasted Atlanta is not on the list. Going across the norther part of the metroplex where there are no freeways, it can take close to two hours to go 20 miles --- not during rush hour!
