I say a prayer for the children, their families and remember these words:

And in despair I bowed my head
“There is no peace on earth,” I said,
“For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”

...Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.”

-Henry W Longfellow

I received several PM's from members asking that this tread be reopened. I will do such as long as we discuss the tragedy and not get into guns and gun control etc

Let's use the thread as a common place for mourning and to express grief. Nothing more........please

My heart sank when I heard the news this afternoon. I feel for those affected. The parents, the slain souls and the teachers. It amazes me that someone would take the life(s) of such innocence. I just got off the phone with my wife who was picking up Aiden from school. She wanted to get off the phone and do nothing more than give our son a big love filled hug. It's simply unbelievable, the actions of some people. Nice post, Wardsweb. A sad day indeed.

Tom

I join you Wardsweb in your prayer .. This ia tragedy and this has been happening too often. it needs to be addressed.. LWasn;t it last week at a mall in Oregon? Something similar ..
I learned about it from your post
I then went online to check the news.. My heart sank. As a father of two ... I know how hard it is to onlyhear a slight distress in any of my two adults children voice... Twenty 27 children between 5 to 10 years old lost their lives ... Such sear is the life of a parent will never heal.. My prayers and thoughts go to them.

I have reached out to the social services director of the town via email to find out if there is any sort of 501(c)(3) set up to make donations. My thought was that all the folks in a small town will need help getting through this, and often, it is the local social services agencies that are best equipped, and least well-funded. If I get information back, I will post it here, assuming that's not inappropriate.
Folks were so giving to our area during the Hurricane, and while that was more widespread, and devastating to people, property and well-being, it doesn't have the horror of this tragic event. My thoughts are with the whole town- which I gather is small. Even living in NYC area, there is a 'small world' aspect. I remember after 911 learning of people I knew whose lives were directly affected. I can't imagine what these people are going through right now.

To the families, trust that your grief and rage are shared halfway around the world. We pray you find justice and peace.

It could happen anywhere Keith. The same day in China a man attacked 22 adults and children outside a school not with guns but a knife.

We have to start asking ourselves why this happens at all and why schools are often targets.

There have been no incidents here that I know of, KNOCK ON WOOD. Now I'm wondering if the fact that security guards are mandatory for all schools here has served as a deterrent. In the early nineties kidnapping was a huge problem.

Typical mall security guard here

Now I don't think more guns is the best solution, especially guns with high penetration like that shown. I am for better security however.

I'm a lurker, and this is only my 2nd post. My $0.02 is that WBF needs to make a clearer line in this regards. It claims the off-topic forum is 'anything goes' and discussions ranging from 'politics to the environment to whatever' are allowed. There is no way this topic can be discussed apolitically or without broaching gun contol IMO.

What is it? Does 'anything go'? Politics or not? A moderated political sub-forum? I'm hesitant to participate further and invest the time to articulate my views only to see the discussion moderated and closed.

+1. When I used to pick up my kids when they were in grade school and high school, I cannot even just enter the school premises without being cleared by the security guard. Even in colleges, guards man the gates wherein only students and faculty with IDs can enter. For a man to just walk in with firearms inside a school during school hours and opening fire on young children is a horrific idea, let alone a fact. I join my friends and relatives in from the East and West coast in sympathizing with the victims' families and hope that we should never get to hear these violent incidents again.

-- Andre, I think I know exactly how you feel, and I feel exactly like you.

Now, what do you think they are going to talk about for the next month or so, and even during Christmas and the New Year?

That's right, I don't even have to mention it; just look around, and in this case here, at what was registered in the name of his Mom. It is outrageous! And I wouldn't be crying all day like I am right now, and feel the extreme pain of all these children's (5 to 10 years old) parents. ...The very worst nightmare in our societies, in the United States of America.

I love music, because it helps to ease my pain, and I also love compassion, and discussions, and healing by talking with my friends, my fellow members. ...And talk openly, because it helps me to be a better person, and appreciate more what I have in my life; music, children, and the right to express and live in harmony.

We need to talk about it more. These are consequences there must be causes. While I understand the need for securityit doesn;t address the causes. 'Also the type of security I see in many cases is due to cause more harm than good.

Just to end up ... A knife is more easily dealt with than other instruments of the genre favored by those who have been perpetrated such atrocities in the USA and elsewhere ...

For those who lurk WBF is a little more than an Audio site, it has become a place of meeting, distraction, aggregation, discussion, debate, learning and enjoyment for many.. Thus the variety of topics .. That means also a place for celebration perforce, of mourning too.

It does happen anywhere, and according to an expert on mass homicide, interviewed yesterday afternoon on NPR, the average number of incidents in the US hasn't changed in decades. The body count, however, is rising.

And it likely will increase over time as we become more connected.
