we all feel the same but let's keep the intent of the thread for exactly the purpose I outlined
I'm a lurker, and this is only my 2nd post. My $0.02 is that WBF needs to make a clearer line in this regards. It claims the off-topic forum is 'anything goes' and discussions ranging from 'politics to the environment to whatever' are allowed. There is no way this topic can be discussed apolitically or without broaching gun contol IMO.
What is it? Does 'anything go'? Politics or not? A moderated political sub-forum? I'm hesitant to participate further and invest the time to articulate my views only to see the discussion moderated and closed.
I read today on one of the web news pages that the well known actor Morgan Freeman has a theory about these shootings. Essentially, what he is saying is that the perpetrator's are seeking notoriety and that the media is fueling these tragic events by giving them what they desire.
His theory is that these criminals are basically loners and losers, by seeing all of the extreme exposure that the media gives to the names and descriptions of these crazy people, the more it is fueling their desire to commit a heinous crime and therefore to be recognized. Morgan states that it would be FAR better IF no publicity whatsoever was given to the perpetrator. This theory would seem to make sense to me.

Steve, I don't think Mr. Freeman is suggesting that the media could keep such a story out of the news, instead I think he is saying don't publicize the name of the perpetrator. It would be difficult to keep such a story out of the news
We have all seen images of grief from this tragedy, and I thought the following in today's NY Times was especially touching and relevant to our main passion
Read the article. Complete load of rubbish. For starters, media coverage is a given. So constructive thinking about how to reduce the number of mass shootings should consider media coverage a constraint, not a variable. You can eradicate traffic deaths overnight by banning traffic. Not gonna happen. Think seatbelts, airbags and DUI laws instead.
Of course, the gun lobby is all over this because it supports their guns are not the problem message. Thanks for nothing mr. Freeman. Go back to making movies, and give up your amateur psychologist career.

Guys, I hears your anguish. I read the news as well but honestly a debate on gun control isn't going to happen here
