DCS Or LAMPIZATOR- YOUR CONSIDERATIONS.

Thanks again guys, great to get such detailed information and tubes-to-go-to suggestions! Do both of you use the GG as a preamplifier? I've got a Classe Omega Pre at the moment and in combination with the dCS Paganini that sounds better then going the amp-direct-route. I am really a sucker for dynamics/details and soundstage so I guess going with the 101d (would the replica PSVane be good enough?) and 242 (this one? http://www.tubecollectors.org/we/archives/242a.pdf Which brand is it?) would satisfy.

The 242 does not work with the GG unless you ask for a specific voltage adjustment. The 242 is a much better version on the same lines of 101d replicas. It works with the B7. Also, I haven't heard the new EML Mesh Globe Anniversary 45s made specially for Lampi, but Wisnon said they are better.

So the 242's are better then the 101D's, what brand is it? So I can look for a place to order them in case I decide to buy a GG (Unfortunately, I first have to sell my Paganini).

Hi Ruben,

I don't use the GG as preamp. I was using my ref 3 but awaiting a new Analog Domain m75. Kedar has used both routes - will let him comment although from memory I think with preamp was his preferred route as although resolution was lower than without preamp, it sounded more musical and engaging.

In terms of tubes, you would be happy with psvane we replica 101d although you could if you were so inclined go all out and obtain nos we 101d. I would recommend new production Kr 242 tubes (Kron) as I have heard them and they are obscene. If you get the GG, you would need a small mod to allow the 242 tube to operate.

It is a shame you could not do a face off with GG and Paganini. I bet if you had it for 1 week, you would listen to Paganini for 5% time only ;)

I had yesterday Lukasz for the short conversation cause he is now on the Ocean .For my specific setup and speakers he thinks KR 242 have too much gain , so my deal with Mike could not be done.
I reported already that I need lower output voltage for my setup and those KR are to powerfull for me. Lukasz suggests that for my setup KR PX4 could be the best match.
For my ears and taste , EML 45 mesh anniv are less transparent and dynamic and still prefer Psvane 101 D WE replicas.
I think is a matter of synergy with recti and amplifier , I use NOS RCA as rectifier in Lampi and the tube amp with A 62 B .

As far as Ruben's question regarding my R2R board is concerned , the answer is - I do not know , the board was installed late 2015 but then in February '16 my Lampi was upgraded and then downgraded after 2 weeks. The only thing I know, I like the sound now;)

Despite the critics about the safety of Lessloss Firewall on this forum , the sound of Lampi improved further after having installed this tweak in my system.

Hi all,

I had a few pm's about the r2r dsd engine - please note that this is only a prototype and not available at this point as far as I am aware.

KR Audio. I wouldn't wait for them, though...if you find them, good, else you have use the EML mesh special anniversary globe 45s, or 300bs from Elrog, KR Audio, etc. Get the KR Audio 274b rectifier instead of the stock EML that comes with the Lampi

Hi I don't like the older EML 45s. But wisnon's comments were about the special EML mesh globe anniversary 45s made for Lampi. Have you heard them? I haven't

Yes , I already reported in Lampi thread , even posted the picture if I am not mistaken.
My comments concern this special edition for Lampi.

Again, I think wisnon could be right , that is very "system dependent" element.

I probably won't sell the Omega before I buy a GG, so I can always compare it in my own setup. But is good to know what others experienced in their own system. Regarding the tubes, it helps to know what types are available and from companies. Is the modification needed for the 242's something that you can do yourself? Or does it need a trip to Poland?

I wish I could do a side-by-side comparison but I am afraid that will not be possible. Living in The Netherlands driving to Poland would be an option, but not something I am planning to do.

@Marslo: that's the most important :)

Thanks, in which case, the special edition does not seem to have changed in characteristics from the older 45, which I did not like (and to which I too preferred the 101d by a big margin

Hi Ruben,

You would need to get that mod done @ factory. If you are buying a used GG rather than new then I would stick with 101d for now and enjoy. If you buy new, then just get it set for 242 from factory.

Thing is, Lampi will be able to sort you out whenever - this is the advantage of these products. New r2r engine, no problem - send back and get a new one. Dsd512 comes out, send it back etc. Can't do that with hardly any products in high end.

Twud be invaluable as a reference were either an definitive post or an updatable sticky created listing the full range of valves that may operate within the B7 and GG , indicating Mod's required and perhaps the valve types that such modification would allow and those that were OK prior to modifications, which might then exclude their use.

The only valve that works on B7 and not on GG is KR 242, unless you mod GG. But the point is while it sounds great on B7, that should not stop one from buying B7 or GG.

Does modifying the voltage on GG to run the KR242 subsiquently preclude any previous incumbant types ?

Only 2A3, which is hardly used anyway. You can use 300b, 101d, 45, px4. Only thing is, no one has done this before :) - it's Bonzo speculation

and for the KR242 you do need pin adapters. not a big deal but I had to source mine in China.

I didn't. Mine might have been made for Lampi.

Indeed - The Kr242 have the regular pins that fit Lampi (and most normal modern amps). They are not special Lampi made afaik.

Actually, Lampi would probably sound faster. Unlike regular valve products (audio research, jadis, levels of Lampi below big 7, etc, the top Lampi models are direct heated triode (DHT), and that makes Lampi extremely fast. With right valves like 101d replicas or 242, it is extremely dynamic and punchy and fast.

I use classical for audition, and you can check Gnomus from pictures at an exhibition for speed and slam

Thanks for the information regarding the tubes and how to set them up. Besides the sound and the philosophy behind the GG, another unique selling point for me is the fact that it is upgradable. dCS does offer firmware upgrades, but being able to keep up with Lampizator with all the new hardware build into your existing DAC is one that weighs really heavy for me.
