He also did a terrific job in The Machinist (2004) where he plays Trevor Reznik, suffering from insomnia so severe that it is taking a toll on his weight and his mental health.

With all of that being said...Roma.

Roma Star Yalitza Aparicio Had the Absolute Best Emotional Reaction to Her Oscar Nomination

You can see her briefly crying in that short Twitter's video (from a cell phone) while she's watching on a laptop with some of her friends (family?); just scroll down slightly from that above link.

FWIW if either Ravi Malek or Christian Bale don’t win Best Actir then it’s rigged. I prefer Ravi because I thought he was better in the role but I also said Bale nailed his role as well.

So either for me works. A tie would be good as well

With all we shared I'm quasi certain that Christian Bale is going to get the Oscar for Best Lead Actor.

Ties are fun, more spreading around ... it's not like movies are a competition, but a participation in the arts of laughing and crying...from comedies to dramas.

Now we have sci-fi flicks for Best Picture (Black Panther from the Marvel comic books).
I gave it about zero chance, not for Best Picture (way too much CGI).

Steve, I think Roma is going to win big next month @ the Oscars, regardless of what we like or less.

Angelina Jolie is helping in promoting Roma from film's director Alfonso Cuarón.

After our earlier attempt to watch Roma my wife heard the buzz about the film and wanted to give it another try. So the other night we started it all over and watched it all the way through this time. Result, neither of us can understand what people see in the film and we both usually enjoy "artsy" films. I'm not even sure what the point or purpose is after seeing it one and a half times.

All in all a disappointing year for movies.

Jim, which one was your favourite of 2018...The Favourite?
It just won six awards (the most) @ ACCA

"The Favorite" was good but not great although the three leads all were deserving of nominations. Olivia Coleman continues to show what a fine actress she is following here roles in "Broadchurch" and "The Night Manager" We both preferred "Mary Queen of Scots" even if it was not loved by the Hollywood types, I enjoyed both "Greenbook" and "On The Basis of Sex" better than most.

Jim

you and I see to always be on the same page when it comes to movies.

What I liked in Roma was the cinematography, sound and editing. I thought they were special and deserve to win the Oscar.

When it comes to a story however, I thought it was the most boring slow moving film of 2018. It will win awards and possibly Best Picture but not for my money. How many times did that camera have to make full scenes about dog poop in the courtyard and watching the housekeepers clean it up. For me the story was a bunch of disjointed vignettes none of which I really cared for

As for a disappointing year for movies I totally agree. It has been this way for the past several years. For me the only highlight of the year in film was Rami Malek playing Freddy Mercury and Christian Bale playing Dick Chaney. One of them will win for sure and my hope is that Rami Malek will prevail

Roma didn't have a 'story'...it was a stream of consciousness

I agree that you and I are often aligned in the movies that both interest and entertain us. The one issue I had with the cinematography in Roma and I could;d be way off on this, I felt the use of a fixed camera position with characters moving in and out of the scene was a bit irritating. Maybe if I watched it again I would see that it actually did not occur as often I imagined.

I do agree that both Rami Malek and Christian Bale deserve their nominations. I was a bit disappointed overall in Veep even though all of the lead characters did fine jobs with their roles. I just thought I lacked focus.

To exemplify the sad state of affairs in quality movies over the years I have to admit that the nomination of Yalitza Aparicio in Roma as best actress, someone who has never before acted, left me wondering "are you kidding?"

And for god's sake, why isn't anyone cleaning up that dog shit regularly? Nobody lives like that. That dog must have a tapeworm.

I believe the point of the dog poop was the servants "rebelling" against the family

I loved Borras actually haha.
